Sandra swept forward immediately, ignoring me completely, and bowed to everyone.

“Welcome elders of the Ashford pack. It is our pleasure to welcome you.” She poked an elbow to Aaron who bowed immediately.

The elder with a scowl stepped forward, opening his arms in a hug.

“Aaron, my boy! Look how big you have gotten.”

“And you look fit as always Elder Johanson” Aaron smiled.

So this was the elder with the shellfish allergy, I realized.

“And who this wonderful woman standing beside you would be?”

Sandra beamed at him, bowing again. “Elder Johanson! It’s such an honor to have you here. My name is Sandra”

The others climbed up and then Aaron introduced them to Sandra, while I watched. He had completely forgotten about me.

Meanwhile, Sandra had already looped her arm with Jo’s.

“Let me show you inside. We wanted everything to feel fresh and modern for your visit.”

Johanson’s scowl softened as he looked around at the velvet couches and glittering showpieces. “Now this is impressive. Asher built quite the legacy, didn’t he?”

Sandra couldn’t reply faster. “We thought the pack deserved to see how far we’ve come under his vision.”

I helped the remaining elders find comfortable seats, offering quiet words of welcome and making sure no one was left standing too long.

They were polite but clearly uncomfortable with the blinding white and chrome everywhere. One older woman in a deep green robe, elder Maren, leaned close and whispered, “A bit… bright, isn’t it, dear?”

I managed a small, understanding smile. “Yeah, its the afternoon sun.”

Luna Lydia finally arrived, looking slightly breathless but radiant in a simple yet elegant gown.

“My deepest apologies for the delay, everyone. Welcome, truly. It’s so good to see all of you” She greeted each elder by name, and they all seemed happy to see her.

Lydia blinked in confusion, following his pointed look toward me and I could swear Sandra tried very hard not to laugh out loud at me being addressed as a maid.

“Maid? No, Elder Johanson. That’s Sienna–soon to be Luna of the pack and Connor’s chosen partner.”

Sandra’s perfect smile wavered for half a second when I was addressed as the future luna, not her but she quickly recovered.

Johanson only gave me a side eye but didn’t feel the need to apologize or talk to me again.

Instead, he turned his attention to the décor, running a hand over a chrome side table. “This looks very modern. Asher always had vision and its great to see you maintain the place so well, Lydia.”

Luna Lydia only smiled as he continued. “Its always good to see the pack moving forward instead of clinging to old ways.” He shot a meaningful look at the more traditionally dressed elders who had barely spoken since arrival.

Sandra jumped in smoothly. “Exactly! We wanted to honor the progress you and the council have made possible. The world is changing and adapting, so should we.”

Elder Maren looked my way. “Could I have something to drink, dear?”

“Oh of course”

I quickly ran to the kitchen to get the tray already prepared for the elders and began offering refreshments based on what I remembered each elder preferred–ginger tea for Johanson, herbal infusions for the others.

When I handed him his cup, he took it wordlessly, scowling into the liquid as if it had personally offended

him.

Lydia steered the conversation gracefully. “How was the journey? Would anyone like to rest before dinner?”

One of the elders, Elder Rita, a quiet woman in a deep green robe, spoke up politely. “The living room is very bright. We prefer simpler surroundings, if possible.”

Luna Lydia glanced at Sandra, who quickly smiled. “I may have gone a little overboard showing off what the pack has achieved. My apologies if it feels too much. I will have it all changed to a simpler theme.”

Johanson waved a hand dismissively. “Change is necessary. Sticking to old beliefs will leave us behind.”

He turned to Aaron with clear approval. “Smart choice with a modern girl, my boy. She’ll take the pack to new heights.”

Sandra’s smile turned smug as she caught my eye across the room,

I could see her calculating gaze as she hovered around Johanson, realizing he preferred her over me. I also knew her hunger for glory and attention so no doubt, she wanted Aaron to be the alpha just so she could become the Luna.

So even if Aaron wasn’t interested in the title, his words that I wasn’t sure if I completely believed or not, Sandra definitely wished to be the Luna.

I… had just wanted Aaron not bothering about the title or the prestige that came with it. But now, I really wasn’t sure what I wanted.

This fake dating with Connor was turning out to be very real with succession talks already underway.

“I hope you stay here for a long time, elder Johanson.” Sandra muttered. “Even after the succession talks. Aaron and I would be pleased to show you around, to teach you new technology if you wished.”
