Sweat clung to the back of my neck as I adjusted the final arrangement of lilies on the side table of the last room and straightened before checking the time.
Hours had passed by in a blur as I raced to make everything perfect as per Luna Lydia’s instructions.
But I would be lying if Connor’s words weren’t the driving fuel.
I ate nothing and worked tirelessly only because he believed in me, confident that I could represent the both of us.
I didn’t want to let him down.
So I stood back and observed the room, going through the checklist one last time before nodding to myself.
Maria appeared behind me just as I loosened my stiff shoulders.
“It looks very nice.”
“Well, I didn’t add the white lilies just like Elder Maren liked on the table beside the window.”
She came forward to pat my back.
“I will do it, you have worked enough. Now, catch your breath a little.”
I sighed and plopped down on the nearest chair, my body sinking into the soft fabric.
‘Oh shoot, I have to go check on the kitchen once to see if they truly followed through…”
I hastily tried to get up but Maria firmly placed her hands on my shoulders and pushed me down.
“Are
you
after my job, girl?” She asked, not too sternly and I gave her a wry smile.
“Not really. But maybe I am good in interior design and hospitality.”
“That you are” she nodded “but don’t you dare snatch my job from me.”
Laughter bubbled up from my lips at that line as I raised my hands in surrender.
“Okay, fine. Here’s the checklist, please do a final check for me.”
“Thats better” She nodded and reminded me. “The elders would be here any minute. And you look exhausted. Go get ready while I handle everything pending.”
“Oh you are a lifesaver” I leaned back a little, letting my body feel the soft fabric around me.
Maria had stepped towards the window, overlooking the garden and she noticed something.

“What?” I hastily got up and went to stand beside her. From here, I could see the gates opening from afar and three cars enter.
“Go inform Luna Lydia quickly”
Maria hastily replied. “She just went to shower ten minutes ago. You have to hurry and greet them.”
“Me?” I gawked at her.
“As future Luna of the pack and Connor’s partner, yes. Now hurry!”
Fuck!
I had planned to take a proper shower but now there was no time for that. I raised my arm and sniffed myself, smelling of sweat and dust so I quickly dashed to the nearest bathroom, and splashed cool water on my face and hand, trying to scrub off the dirt and grime as quickly as possible.
I also grabbed a perfume and sprayed an unhealthy amount on myself, ran a comb through my hair, twisting it into a quick, neat bun and dusted my clothes.
A quick glance in the mirror showed a girl who looked tired but presentable which was good enough for now.

I hurried toward the main entrance, skipping two steps at a time and for a second I wondered if I had stepped into a completely different room.
As I passed through the living hall, my steps slowed. Sandra had undone everything I spent the entire morning and majority of the afternoon carefully decorating.
The changes hit harder up close. The cozy reading nook with its old leather chairs was replaced by sleek, uncomfortable modern pieces. The warm rugs I placed near the couch were gone, swapped for cold marble and expensive–looking throws that looked more like art than something you could actually use.
I shook my head. It was too late to change anything now and the living room was empty. There was no time to call Aaron or his precious girlfriend as the first cars rolled up the long driveway, their headlights cutting through the evening dusk.
I straightened my shoulders and immediately climbed down the top of the wide stone stairs, heart beating a little faster than I wanted.
One by one the elders stepped out of the cars. Some wore flowing traditional robes, while others wore simpler attire with beautiful, almost tribal jewelry that caught the light. They walked in as they looked around, taking in the huge mansion and the lush front yard.
All except one who wore a crisp button–down shirt and slacks that looked out of place among the robes and
gowns.
His face seemed to be set in a permanent scowl.

But when he struggled with the steps, breath coming in short, irritated puffs. I rushed forward to offer my arm without thinking,
“Here, let me help you, Elder,” I said softly, slipping my shoulder under his for support.
