The second scream was even worse. A high, broken wail echoed through the hall that made my stomach churn.

Connor threw the screaming, bleeding man against the nearest wall like a ragdoll. Rory crumpled to the floor/wailings he cradled the useless stumps where his hands had been. Blood pooled around him in a widening circle.

Everybody stared aghast at the violence Connor had just displayed, even alpha Asher was stunned.

When Connor’s gaze slid to Elder Johanson, he looked away.

Connor turned back to the bleeding man on the floor. “Be grateful I didn’t cut out your tongue as well/But if you dare every think of Sienna the wrong way again… that will be your last thought.”

He then grabbed Rory’s collar and dragged him through the polished marble floor, leaving a trail of blood and bits of fles that came loose from his hands.

Rory kept wailing as Connor brought him in front of me and threw him forward so his head fell in front of my feet.

“Apologize to her!”

“S–sorry. I am sorry” Rory wailed, joining just the two stumps of his broken hands, tears streaming down his face.

“I didn’t hear you!”

“I am sorry…”

“LOUDER!!”

Connor’s voice boomed through the hall and Rory screamed.

“I apologize for my behavior, miss…”

“LUNA SIENNA CONNOR ASHFORD!”

My heart didn’t just skip a beat when he said that but stopped beating entirely for a few seconds.

Did he just take my name along with his like I was his wife already? And why did it sound like it was always meant to be?

“Luna Ashford. Please forgive me, please ask the alpha to spare me!”

Connor was going to lunge at Rory again but I stopped him.

“He received his punishment. Now calm down please”

I said, stepping in between the bleeding Rory and Connor who still looked mad with rage.

Connor was breathing hard, his jaw set and his fingers clenched in a fist.

“Look at her! You insulted and tried to…” He couldn’t even get himself to finish the sentence,

“But she…she wants you to keep breathing”

Rory fell to my feet again. “Thank you, Luna. May the Goddess bless you!”

looked around hastily to find it in a puddle of blood.

Rory crawled towards it and tried to uselessly pick it up but without any fingers to grab it, he was failing at it.

Connor simply walked over and smashed it into pieces, and Rory luckily pulled whatever was left of his hand away.

The crunch of metal and glass breaking echoed through the giant hall as Connor dug the heels of his shoes in it, reducing the device to scrap.

Connor was about to say something again but then I placed a firm hand on his chest. “Enough. Don’t waste your breath or time on him anymore. He isn’t worth it.”

Those words seemed to finally do the trick.

Connor’s voice echoed through the hall, cold and commanding. “This is a warning to not just you, but to everyone here. Nobody should dare to even look at my partner the wrong way, or treat her wrongly. Because if that happens, I will not care who it is. Everybody will meet the same fate.”

His warning hung in the air like a death sentence. The crowd was dead silent, faces pale with shock. The entire Ashford pad stared at him like they had never seen this side of him before.

Sandra looked genuinely afraid for the first time. Aaron’s face was ashen.

He cast one final, sweeping look across the entire hall which was a clear warning to every single person present, including hi own family.

Then he slowly reached for my hand, interlocking our fingers. His grip was warm and steady despite the blood on his knuckles. He threw the knife away and it clattered on the floor before coming to stop beside Rory who had passed out from the pain and blood loss.

Without another word, Connor turned around and led me out of the hall.

I walked beside him, heart still racing. His grip on my hand never loosened as we walked out of the door and then stepped. on the soft grass in the backyard.

My first thought was that he would only lead me away from the guests and then find a quiet place to lecture me about my mistakes.

But he kept walking and I noticed his car waiting in the driveway. Realizing he was going to drop me off home, I spoke.

“Connor, we have to talk like you said.”

But he didn’t reply. He didn’t even show that he had heard me.

“Connor!” I tried again. “I know you are angry but please can we talk first?”

Still no response. I tried freeing my hand from his grip but his grip stayed firm and only let go of me when we were just beside his car.

He wordlessly reached for the car keys and unlocked it.

“This is the last time I am dropping you home. Tell your mom to find another driver for you

He began to get inside the car but I slid between the small space in between him and the car door.

“No, you are not my driver. Mom trusts you to keep me safe.”

His eyes hardened. “But do you?”

He shook his head. “You don’t. Or else I wouldn’t be hearing about those photos from strangers rather than you.”

I reached for his arm. “I didn’t know about them until recently. And I also didn’t know it would blow up like this.”

“Blow up? What do you mean by that?”

Shit. I did my best to summarize the fiasco in a few words while Connor’s eyes searched my face like he was recalling all t past events.

“Wait a minute. We were at the resort just a day before I flew to London, right?”

I nodded wordlessly.
