The Wrong Brother’s Temptation

Chapter 198

Sienna

“Connor!!!”

I shouted at him, hoping this was some kind of cruel joke, hoping he’d walk back through that door in a second like he hadn’t just used my body’s craving for him against me.

And maybe then I would yell at him until I couldn’t anymore, taking out all the frustration about this situation and my anxiety about what’s coming next.

But he really did leave me there all alone with my wrists bound by a hair tie on his bed.

Frustrated with him, and with myself in equal measure, I angrily pushed myself off the bed, worked the hair tie loose from around my wrists, and shoved my hair back from my face.

For what seemed like a long time, I just stood there wondering whether I should chase after him or just let him stew in whatever corner of the mansion he’d stormed off to.

Maybe I needed a different approach. Maybe there was a way to solve the problem of this trial, and whatever Johansson had cooking behind that infuriating smile of his that didn’t involve Connor facing the consequences of my failure.

But his words kept circling back, particularly his warning of how he would stop exercising restraint and ensure nothing would stop me from climbing him like a tree.

The mere memory of the look on his face when he said that and the way his eyes danced with promise made me shiver despite the warm sweater covering me.

Would I mind if he dated someone else in front of me?

I didn’t let myself finish that thought because I was afraid of the answer. Not wanting to be by myself and spiral down, I grabbed my phone off the nightstand and dialed Jane instead.

She picked up on the fourth ring, her voice thick with sleep despite it being nearly noon.

“If you aren’t some hotshot alpha, leave me alone” she replied though it was not so much of a question but more of a groan.

“Jane. Are you okay?”

“I have been up since four AM finishing an assignment that should not legally be allowed to exist,” she grumbled, and I could hear the rustle of papers, alongwith the wrinkle of plastic which told me she was seated on her bed with packets of chips and other snacks littered all around her.

“My neck feels like I slept in a filing cabinet. I hate everyone who designed this course. I hate the concept of deadlines. I hate everything…”

“Oh, would you like to share with me?” I asked, feeling guilty to just dump my worries on her when she was clearly overwhelmed herself.

That question, however, had the opposite effect

She stopped mid–complaint.

There was a pause, and when she spoke again her voice had changed completely, sharpened into something

alert.

“Wait. What’s wrong?”

“Nothing’s wrong, I just…”

“Sienna. You call me when there’s a crisis you can’t solve and never before have you asked me how I was doing.”

“Ouch. Am I that bad of a friend? I’m sorry, Jane”

I hesitated, guilt pricking at me at the way she casually roasted me. I only ever seemed to call her when I needed something, rarely just to check how her own life was going because my own was a complete mess.

I felt emotional all over again and Jane was quick to dismiss it.

“No, you befriended me when nobody wanted to talk to the new transfer girl. You helped me with notes, came to teach me math when I was down with fever one day before our exam, remember?”

I had forgotten all about it.

“Doesn’t matter, if you have something…”

But she cut me off. “I have nothing interesting to share and I am dying for problems to solve that aren’t my own so spit it out.”

“But…”

“Sienna!”

There was a warning in her tone that told me she would jump out of the phone and shake me by my shoulders if I didn’t answer her right away.

“Okay. Okay, I’ll tell you everything but can we just meet somewhere? This isn’t a phone conversation.”

“Oh nice. I need to step out of this hellhole. Can we meet at the café near the bookstore in an hour. I also have to shower first and not look like a homeless person” Jane stifled another yawn but I heard her jumping out of the bed.

“Sure, see you in an hour”

“Bring emotional damage. I’ll order caffeine and some tasty food.”

I hung up, but I was already feeling a lot better after speaking to her.

It was a miracle I had made friends with Jane and Olivia when I had been so occupied with being Aaron’s

friend throughout school.

But now I was glad I had them though I needed to check up on Olivia who was busy studying in another continent.

I put that thought aside for now, and got up from the bed to find my bag, fishing through it for my keys as I stepped out into the corridor.

I wasn’t paying attention to where I was going and walked directly into someone’s chest.

I looked up, thinking it was Connor and was about to launch a tirade when I saw a familiar face smiling at me.

“Watch your step, Sia” Aaron said as his hands shot out to steady me.

I gave him a small smile and mumbled. “Yeah sorry”

“You seem to be in a rush. Are you going somewhere?” he asked casually.

“Yeah, I was going to meet a friend,” I nodded, putting my phone in the bag and adjusting the strap on my shoulder.

“Oh I thought I was your best friend,” he teased with a familiar smile he’d been using on me since we were children.

“Uh..”

“Relax. I was just kidding. You are allowed to have friends and go out to meet other people.”

I smiled back at him cheekily. “Thank you for the permission, bestie”

At that he laughed heartily and I was reminded of the countless times I had spent all day coming up with sarcastic replies or jokes just to see that easy laughter spill out of his mouth.
