Chapter 204
Sienna
“Why are you yelling at me?” I threw her a baffled look.
“Right. I shouldn’t yell at you, I should beat some sense into you”
She looked around for something to hurl at me and ended up throwing a stupid straw.
“Why are you getting so violent all of a sudden? Do you need to see a doctor?”
“Not me but you really need to get your eyes and your brain checked.”
I huffed. “They work just fine”

Jane narrowed her gaze at me, folding her hands. “Oh really? Then tell me what was Connor’s reaction to your excellent idea?”
“He… he did not take that well.” I replied in a small voice.
“I bet he didn’t,” Jane said, entirely too knowingly for someone who hadn’t been in the room.
“He got so annoyed,” I frowned but warming up now that I’d actually started talking, the words picking up speed.
“He’s so arrogant sometimes, Jane, you have no idea. He just decides things and expects everyone to fall in line, and then he pins me down and tells me not to say something like that again like he’s the one who gets to make decisions about my life, and then he just… leaves.”
I grabbed the coke and slurped on it, the straw making weird noises before I continued. “He just legit stormed off without any explanation. I mean, can you have a conversation like the alpha heir you are?. And this whole time I’m just supposed to sit there wondering what I did wrong when really I was just trying to help him, and…”
Jane slammed both hands flat on the table. “Enough!”
I jumped, nearly knocking over my own coke.
“Are you for real right now?” she looked hysterical.
“What?”
She stared at me, mouth slightly open, an expression somewhere between disbelief and pity. “You really don’t see it, do you.”
“See what?” I was completely, honestly baffled.
“That the man is completely, hopelessly obsessed with you.”

I let out a short and disbelieving laugh.

“Are you forgetting he’s a casanova, Jane. He’s never stuck with one girl longer than a few weeks his entire life. You remember the stories about his reputation and string of one night stands we heard right? And my wolf is already making everything messy enough without adding delusions on top of it.”
“He’s stuck with you,” Jane enquired, “for how long now?”
“That’s different. It’s fake.”
“Is it, though?” She challenged
“Yes,” I said, firmer than I felt. “It’s fake, Jane. We started it because becoming Alpha was his true goal, and I happened to be convenient. He himself said there’s no chance of feelings getting involved so that was the reason he even considered me.”
I stabbed a fry with more force than necessary. “And besides, have you actually looked at him? He’s….he’s leagues above me. Not just in looks but in everything. He’s not going to fall for some ordinary, freckled girl who trips over her own words half the time and can’t even keep her own wolf under control.”
“That’s the dumbest thing you’ve said all morning,” Jane sounded exasperated, “and this morning already included the sentence it’s a bit chilly today so I wore a sweater‘ as an explanation for showing up looking like a magazine cover.”
“Jane…”
“I’m just saying, for someone so smart and having aced all your exams, you have a truly stunning blind spot the size of this entire café.”
“Can we please not do this,” I tried to bring her back to the important discussion at hand. “I don’t want to talk about whether he’s obsessed with me or whatever theory you’re running with. I want a solution because I have an actual problem, Jane. The last trial almost killed him, tested his willpower and strength and he bled so much… so I can’t even imagine what will happen to me. So can you please just help me with that instead of psychoanalyzing my non–existent love life?”
Jane let out a long and exasperated but finally gave in and reached for another fry off my plate since she’d apparently annihilated her own. “Fine. If he’s not going anywhere…” she held up a hand before I could interrupt, “…which he isn’t, regardless of what you want to believe about that then the solution is simple isn’t it? Just don’t fail the trial.”
“Groundbreaking advice.”
“Let me finish.” She pointed the fry at me for emphasis. “You said the last trial was about strength and willpower, right? So get him to train you. Have him teach you, guide you, or whatever it takes. You’ve got a resource sitting right there who’s already been through exactly this kind of evaluation. Use him.”
I blinked because that thought had genuinely not occurred to me.
“What do you mean?” I asked slowly, my curiosity increasing.
“I mean the man clearly wants to protect you from every possible bad outcome,” Jane explained, “given the level of unhinged behavior you’ve just described to me over fries. So let him. Have him actually help you

prepare instead of just being dramatic about you not being allowed to suggest breakups.” She shrugged, realizing she really had given me a solid piece of advice. “That way you won’t fail him….and even if something does go wrong, he would know you gave your best. Problem solved. You’re welcome.”
She flipped her hair as I only stared at her, my brain trying to process it all.
Jane sipped on her coke as I sat there, mulling it over. If the trial really did hinge on strength and willpower the way Johansson’s tone had suggested, there wasn’t anyone better positioned to help me prepare than Connor who’d already survived a brutal version of it.
