Chapter 211

Spina

He gestured at the mat patiently, still not giving me even a hint of what was going on in his mind.

“Show me”

“Well then give me one first.”

He frowned. “Give you what?”

I looked at him like he was being deliberately dense on purpose. “A plank to hold. Obviously.”

His eyes narrowed and I think he was having trouble understanding me as well.

So I shrugged, already turning away because standing still under that stare was becoming dangerous.

“Never mind, I’ll find it myself.”

There was a stack of equipment near the far wall.

I spotted a long, flat piece of wood that looked promising, grabbed it with both hands, and marched back to stand in front of him, holding it out like I had just discovered fire.

“See? Easy. Plank acquired.”

Connor opened his mouth, closed it and opened it again.

For a moment he looked like a man questioning every life choice that had led him to this exact second.

Then he stepped closer, close enough that his mouthwatering scent with a tinge of antiseptic and something darker made my thoughts go fuzzy.

He loomed over me and damn that scent washed over me in a concentrated wave. My brain short- circuited for half a second. I tried to step back on pure instinct knowing very well that without the meds I was very vulnerable,

His hand closed around my elbow and pulled me right back in, eyes cold and devoid of any warmth.

“Is this a joke to you?”

There was real anger under the words this time.

The look on his face made my stomach drop through the floor. I tried to bluff anyway, opening my mouth with some half-formed excuse about different training styles, but he cut me off with a sharp, raised voice that hit me like a physical slap.

“Enough!”

Hroze

He had never shouted at me, HOT since we were chaidren and he was still the mean older brother who

delighted in making me cry. The harshness of his voice now was a stark contrast to the softness I had gotten used to and it made my face crumple before I could stop it.

He didn’t soften.

“On one hand you storm into my office, talking about how worried you are about the trial and how you refuse to fail. On the other hand, you treat the entire thing like a game and act like I’m a clown for trying to prepare you properly.”

“No, I didn’t…”

“Forget training you have never ever set foot in the gym in your life”

He didn’t ask it as a question but said it out loud as a fact that he didn’t need any proof of.

“I fucking cancelled my meetings for this and what do I see when you show up? You flailing your hands like a fucking penguin and bouncing around and then having the audacity to keep lying through your teeth instead of admitting you know shit about exercising or training.”

I stood there, feeling increasingly small and timid as he kept talking, kept pouring out all his frustration from Goddess knew where on me.

Connor yelling at me was something I had never imagined and for a few seconds I didn’t even know how to react so I just stood there, frozen stupidly.

“Now where is that fake confidence?” He barked out loud.

“I…I just didn’t want to….let you down”

“Oh you did more than let me down, Sienna”

No speckles, no warmth, no gently guiding me to the right course of action…

I was starting to remember why I hated this version of him in my childhood so much.

“Did you even for a second give it some thought to why your wolf was struggling so much?”

I hadn’t. Well, the doctor had said something about the wolf being late to the party and I had believed her.

When I didn’t answer him, he added in an even voice. “That is why”

“You ran to the doctor, took some stupid pills instead of taking any actual effort to align your body well to the wolf so that it could emerge sooner because worrying about Sandra and what schemes she is up to is more important than putting efforts on yourself.”

The words, harsh and brutally honest, hit me harder than the raised voice or anything else he had said before.

Something raw and painful twisted behind my ribs so sharply I almost flinched. Tears stung at the back of my eyes but I forced them down with sheer stubbornness, staring at a random spot on his shirt until the burning eased enough that I could breathe again.

“Look at me.”

I barely did, using every bit of my willpower to not argue with him just like old times because my vissos was still a little shiny around the edges.

He exhaled through his nose, some of the sharpest edge leaving his posture, though not nearly enough for my liking.
