Chapter 224
Sienna
Everything was still under control. I had gotten so far without getting seen. I could do this.

I breathed in and out a few more times to calm my nerves because I had always followed all the rules, and been a proverbial good girl.
But now I was spying on my fake boyfriend.
I grabbed my purse, secured the straps firmly on my shoulders and stepped outside the bathroom wondering which direction to walk in when I suddenly caught a flash of a familiar broad back moving through the lobby.
I finally found Connor!
Thanking my stars, I followed him like my uneven sandals depended on it, keeping just enough distance that I wouldn’t look completely unhinged.
The hotel lobby was all marble with ridiculously bright lights that could turn anyone blind.
Hiding became even harder here but thankfully there were several other guests passing by and tall pillars alongwith humongous vases with even bigger plants dotting the passage.
I kept sneaking behind the potted plants, keeping an eye on Connor who was greeted by a manager soon enough.
The manager looked like he had been waiting specifically for this moment, bowing to him as a greeting. I ducked behind a wide pillar, heart hammering, dress feeling even shorter under the chandeliers.
The manager led him toward the restaurant. I followed at what I prayed was a casual, non–stalker distance, slipping from pillar to potted plant to decorative wall panel like the world’s worst spy.
He stopped in front of this wide door with a gold frame and soft painted flowers on the glass. Even the doors here were extra.
The manager pushed it open to let Connor in.
I waited for a full minute, counting down the seconds, reminding myself I couldn’t get too close to Connor.
Whispering “don’t be weird, act normal,” to myself, I strutted forward like I owned the place and went after
him.
The room on the other side was even worse.
Long tables covered in white tablecloths and more food than I had ever seen was spread across giant tables.
Little pastries were stacked on tiered stands alongwith dishes I didn’t know the names of.
crimen was so much food here, all placed aritistically and my stomach rumbled at that sight.

I was on just that salad since morning and my mouth watered at the sight of so much unhealthy food.
There were even more flowers placed on the tables and more chandeliers hung from the ceiling than ever.
People in beautiful clothes were clinking glasses and talking politely to each other.
I felt so out of place it was almost funny.
I spotted an empty table near the side and made a beeline for it, broken heel and all.
I sat down too fast, almost missed the chair, caught myself with a slightly too–loud scrape of wood against the polished floor, making a server look up at me.
I gave him a nervous smile and then immediately grabbed the menu and held it up in front of my face like a shield.
A man two tables over glanced over at the noise. I peeked above the menu, made accidental eye contact, and immediately pretended to be deeply engrossed in the list of dishes I wasn’t even reading.
“Act normal,” I muttered under my breath. “You are a normal woman at a stupid, fancy event. You will just observe from a distance and leave as soon as you can.”
That was the plan anyway.
I risked another look in Connor’s direction to see that he had stopped at one of the tables. I leaned forward a little, trying to see without looking like I was snooping.
He reached out and tapped the shoulder of a girl sitting there. She turned toward him, and even from this distance I could tell she was smiling.
She was wearing a ridiculously expensive gown, rivaling the ones Connor had stacked in the mansion for
The fabric hugged her curves, her hair was long and shiny and she laughed softly at something he said.
Her back was facing me so I couldn’t get a good look at her face but Connor smiled at her.
Not the small, controlled almost–smile he gave me when he was amused against his will. This was a real one, warm and easy.
She raised her hand which Connor accepted, his warm fingers closing around hers.
And then to my horror, he brought her hand closer to his mouth and brushed his lips gently on her knuckles.
My fingers tightened around the menu until the edges warped a little.
I stayed half–hidden behind it, heart doing uncomfortable things in my chest, broken sandal resting awkwardly against the chair leg, and watched the man I had chased across half the city greet another woman like he’d been looking forward to it all day.
“Great,” I whispered to myself. “This is going great.”
She had gotten un so Connor bad
