I ducked behind the pillar again, dug through my purse, and pulled out Jane’s perfume bottle for what was probably its fourth deployment of the evening, dousing myself in another cloud thick enough to be visible from space.

If Connor’s wolf caught even a whiff of me now, he would just lose his shit and I couldn’t afford it.

So I would rather smell like an entire flower shop had exploded, not like myself, not like anything human

at all.

I needed to find a table which was closer than my current spot but not close enough to be obvious, and needed to do this without drawing the attention of a few servers I thought were eyeing me with a mixture of confusion and curiosity.

I flagged down a passing waiter instead, going for a casual voice that suggested I dined at places like this every evening of my life and this was simply a routine Tuesday.

“Could I please get a table near the window,” I asked.

“Of course, mam. Please follow me”

He led me to one and I took a seat.

“My friend would be joining me soon. Can I have a lemonade until then?”

He nodded and left and I sagged in relief before straightening after hearing the girl behind me laugh loudly.

“I mean you should really leave her, she is a mess”

My ears instantly twitched.

“I’ve been crushing on you for so long and yet you keep going to that club to your flings while I keep watch over her”

Huh? What club? What flings?

Was Connor living a double life? And who had he appointed to keep a watch on me?

Most importantly, who the fuck was she blatantly admitting her feelings for him?

The server arrived with the lemonade and I instantly reached for the cool drink because I was tired already.

I had barely taken a sip when I heard another line.

“She peed all over the couch, I can’t take this anymore,” and the girl started to sob hysterically.

This was not his window.

his restaurant it turned out, had windows on both sides, facing two entirely different rooms, and in my haste I had been seated at a table facing the other half of the restaurant.

I turned around to get an excellent, unobstructed view of a middle–aged couple three tables away who were, from the sound of it, in the middle of a genuinely serious argument.

“Your dog is a menace and so are you. I am breaking up”

The girl shot up to her feet and walked away angrily while the man followed her.

I had wasted nearly five full minutes eavesdropping on the wrong argument entirely, and Connor was somewhere across the restaurant doing whatever he was doing, completely unaware I was failing this badly at spying on him.

I grabbed my glass of lemonade, tipped it deliberately, and let it clatter off the edge of the table with a satisfying crash, water spreading across the tablecloth in a dramatic little flood.

The server came rushing in.

“I’m so sorry…”

“No worries mam, let me find you another table for you”

This time I let myself be guided toward a new table on the correct side of the restaurant, my back angled carefully toward Connor’s table with two tables between us, close enough to eavesdrop from a safe distance.

I sat down hastily without turning around because I couldn’t. If I did, and Connor happened to glance up at the wrong moment, this entire mission would end in the most humiliating way possible.

I focused on listening instead.

“-the terms should be finalized by the end of the quarter,” Connor was saying, his voice smooth and

confident.

The girl’s voice answered dryly, like the deal itself barely deserved her attention.

“As long as the numbers work. I’m not signing anything that undervalues our position.”

“They work,” Connor assured her.

A server must have arrived at their table because I heard the clink of glasses being set down, and then the girl asked him a question that made my whole body go rigid.

I still couldn’t remember where I had heard her before though I felt like the name was dancing on the tip

of my tongue.

“How are you feeling, by the way? After the trial, I mean.”

There was a pause before Connor answered.

“I’m fine,” Connor said, and his tone seemed to have sharpened slightly, though he kept it smooth.
