“What?” I said again, because apparently that was the only word my brain could produce right now.

“You go first,” Bob repeated, like this was obvious and completely normal information that required no further explanation whatsoever.

I tried to plant my feet. “I really don’t think…”

“You’ll do great,” he placed his hands on my shoulders and began steering me towards the door.

“Everyone’s nervous for the first time. You’ll be fine.”

I tried to place my hands on the doorframe but he pushed harder.

“I really don’t think I should be doing this,” My voice turned squeaky now and I was already half-turning as if the hallway behind me might offer a sudden and miraculous escape route.

“You are going to do amazing, sweetie. These rich men really love fresh faces and yours screams fresh and naive like an untouched flower”

What the fuck was that supposed to mean?

“This is…just a dance or something right?”

Not that I could even shake a leg to call it a dance but ‘untouched flower’ made me feel queasy.

“Yeah sure, until they ask for more”

“I don’t understand”

I grumbled as he finally managed to push me an inch further ahead.

“Look” he gave me a look like he was imparting some pearls of wisdom.

“Girls die for this opportunity to impress the rich alphas. Many have earned more in a single night than their entire family could in a lifetime. Just keep yourself open to everything the alphas ask and you are not allowed to say no”

He said alphas so that meant there could be more than one. That only meant there would be more eyes on me and the chances of getting caught increased even more.

Especially I couldn’t dance even if my life depended

This definitely sounded nothing like a dance.

“I can’t say no to what exactly?”

“To anything or anyone. Catch an alpha’s attention and get him to empty his pockets for you. You know what I mean right?” Bob gave me a knowing smile.

I didn’t but had a sinking feeling I would hate it.

There has to be someone else who could take the first spot. Someone who actually knows what they’re dong.”

“If I were you, I would jump on this chance, to spend a night with those handsome men AND make thousands of dollars to let them use me so stop cribbing,” Bob said, losing some of his patience.

Use me?

“But…”

His face took on a stern look because he had never once been forced into a tiny costume under stage lights or asked to smile while dying internally.

“Just move that body, and try not to trip over your own feet.”

The door clicked shut behind me before I could invent a sudden and dramatic medical emergency involving my knees, my dignity, or both.

The cramped up space that he called a room was smaller than it had any right to be and twice as loud.

Bright vanity bulbs framed three long mirrors along the far wall, casting everything in a harsh, unforgiving glow in a stark contrast against the awfully black walls all around me.

I coughed mildly due to the overpowering smell of hairsprays, perfumes and the sharp chemical bite of setting spray that clung to the back of my throat.

All around me, the girls were getting ready like they had been eagerly waiting for this day all their lives.

I inched closer to the metal rack near the wall holding a chaotic collection of costumes. They were all tiny, glittering, and designed by someone who hated the idea of being covered because I wasn’t even sure they could be called dresses but just sequins, feathers and beads strapped on pieces of fabric that the girls were happily putting on.

“Would you mind?”

A girl looked at me who was just in her thongs and a bra and I stepped aside to let her pick through the available selection and wear whatever the hell she wanted.

A low table overflowed with makeup palettes, brushes, pins, and bottles while two make up specialists began tending to the girls one by one after they had dressed up.

Someone had knocked over a pot of loose powder earlier; a faint white dust still clung to the edge of the table that I hastily stepped away from and bumped into one of the make up artists.

“Wait for your turn, will you?” She huffed and I nodded before moving away from her.

“-if Connor looks at me even once I’m taking it as a sign from the universe”

A blonde girl was telling another who was pulling up the zip of her very small skirt.

“Oh I’ve heard he is very picky and doesn’t like an easy game”

The blonde girl shrugged, staring at her reflection in the mirror and practicing an air kiss.

ut he is a casanova and I heard he never slept with the same girl twice. Goddess, I would be the one to break that curse”

Her friend giggled as she combed her hair.

“Yeah, I heard he might be looking around for a new partner”

My ears twitched at that.

“Are you serious?” the blonde girl shrieked.
