Chapter 231
Sinna
One of the other dark-haired, and tall girls began strutting towards the edge of the stage confidently, swaying her hips as much as possible.
My gaze followed her and noticed she was advancing towards a man in a deep burgundy jacket sitting alone, watching her with open, unashamed interest.
He looked way old to be her grandfather, had a big belly and white hair with his front teeth almost protruding out of his lips when he smiled.
She caught his eye, held it, and slid one strap down her shoulder very, very slowly.
He was already reaching for his wallet before the strap had finished slipping.
Taking that as an invitation, she jumped down off the stage in one fluid movement, landing directly in front of him.
He leered at her quite openly as she began to move slowly and deliberately, her hands trailing along her own hips as she rolled her body in front of him.
She planted her feet on either side of his legs, close enough that he could have reached out and touched her if he wanted to.
I recalled Bob’s suggestion of being open to anything and anyone and tried not to recoil.
The man reached into his jacket instead, and a moment later dollar bills were fluttering down around her, catching the light as they fell, scattering across the floor at her feet like green confetti.
She let out a delighted chuckle and bent down to scoop a few up and stash them in her bra as more rained down.
The man’s friends, all approximately his age with varied shades of grey on their heads were seated at the table beside him. They hooted loudly, banging their glasses together, calling out things I didn’t want to hear clearly enough to understand.
One of them stood with unsteady legs, and tried to fling a bill directly at her face.
She wasn’t shocked or stunned nor did she try to step back. Instead, she caught it out of the air without breaking stride, tucking it neatly into the strap at her hip like she’d done it a thousand times.
Maybe she probably had.
My stomach lurched.
I prayed no man in this club would ever take interest in me and made me do this weird dance in front of
him.
Except maybe one person? Though I wasn’t sure how I would handle that.
Right now, I feared that was going to be me any minute now.

Some version of that exact scene would play out involving me except with Connor and Lily watching me from afar, leaving me with absolutely nowhere left to hide once the lights inevitably swung in my direction.
I feared someone would realize the newest girl on stage had absolutely no idea what she was doing, had never once in her entire sheltered, homework-obsessed life practiced anything resembling seduction on command, and was currently one wrong step away from either falling flat on her face or being recognized by the exact man she’d followed here in the first place.
I glanced sideways frantically, and found Blondie.
She hadn’t moved from her spot near the front, hips still rolling in that same slow figure-eight, but her eyes weren’t on the crowd generally.
I assumed she was stalking her prey, wanting to entice some loaded billionaire to splurge on her like her friend did.
But then I followed her gaze and realized that her gaze was fixed, unwaveringly, on Connor’s corner table
She twirled a little while tracking every laugh Lily pulled out of him and I saw her face crumple for a second before sharpening into focus like a predator waiting for the exact right moment to strike.
I thought of the little glass vial tucked into her bosom, secured tightly so it wouldn’t fall off no matter how much she moved until she pulled it out and felt something cold slide down my spine to join the jealousy already curdling in my stomach.
Bob, meanwhile, had noticed the same thing I had.
Despite the falling dollar bills and the appreciative hooting three tables over, the actual guest of honor who his entire troop had been gushing about backstage hadn’t bothered to even look at his dancers.
Connor remained comfortably tucked in his corner, entirely unbothered, and too far from the stage for Bob’s evening to be considered a success.
I wasn’t sure if I liked that because Connor’s attention was solely on Lily and whatever she was saying.
I really hoped they were discussing contract terms.
But then why would she need to place her hand on his knee and lean forward like that to talk about projected profits?
“Excuse me!”
Bob’s voice dragged me out of my thoughts and I realized I had just been standing so I started to poorly imitate the other girls.
A few heads turned in Bob’s direction.
“My deepest apologies for the interruption, but I would be failing in my duties as your host tonight if I didn’t properly acknowledge the presence of a very special guest among us.”
A single spotlight swung away from the stage and landed on Bob who was standing near the edge of the
stage.

He held the microphone too close to his mouth and was beaming out at the crowd like this was the moment he’d been looking forward to all evening.
“Its my great honor,” he continued, spreading both arms wide, “to have among us tonight none other than the future Ashford Alpha himself.”
My whole body went rigid.
A second spotlight swept the crowd and stopped directly on Connor’s table.
Oh no!
