I whipped my head up so fast, I would have cracked a bone in my neck.
My eyes were seeing blurred shapes and figures and the club seemed to tilt to the side a little.
I blinked furiously, trying to ascertain if the low and cold voice belonged to the person I was dying to get hold of.
My gaze tried to blend on the five different faces of the same person, trying to merge it into one.
My ears twitched and my heart rejoiced, feeling as if hope had been injected inside of me at the mere sound of him.
His voice was so familiar that every muscle in my body unlocked at once.
“Co….Connor” I whispered.
There was no answer but I saw a strong and steady hand clamped around the bald man’s wrist.
The fingers were digging painfully hard into the wrist of Marcus who was visibly shocked an inch from my shoulder.
Meanwhile, Connor stood there in his dark suit with his sleeves shoved up to his forearms and his jaw so tight it looked carved.
His eyes weren’t the eyes I knew. They were black and burning with a rage so pure it stole my breath.
He wasn’t even looking at me but he was looking at the man he held.
Relief crashed through me so hard my knees almost gave out.
“Connor,” I whispered.
He didn’t answer but twisted the bald guy’s arm instead. Hard.
A crack rang out followed by a pained scream that tore through the club. It was high–pitched, raw and awful, louder than the music.
The bass cut off mid–beat when that scream echoed through the club and the dancers froze momentarily.
I don’t think anybody had even realized Connor wasn’t dancing amidst them anymore. Most of the dancers stared with a stunned expression while Bob stood there with his mouth hanging half open.
The few lingering guests who had stopped to watch the dance stopped drinking and every head in the room snapped toward the exit.
For one long second, nobody moved.

Then everything broke loose. Chairs scraped, girls shrieked and a tray crashed to the floor loudly as servers
scattered.
Half the crowd stampeded toward the far doors, tripping over each other, while the other half pressed against the walls with wide eyes, wondering how did they end up in this situation.
The bald man dropped to his knees, cradling his arm.
His face had gone gray and was slick with fat drops of sweat trickling down his smooth, round head.
He stared up at Connor with a mix of terror and pure confusion.
“Oh my?” he gasped. “The Ashford alpha…I didn’t…see you there”
He tried smiling but Connor’s face stayed cold and unforgiving. For someone who was wasted and drunk, he could hold himself really well.
I peered at him intently, wondering if he had noticed me at all because he hadn’t bothered to acknowledge me or even look at me.
“Not the brightest bulb are you?” Connor asked though there was no humor in his voice.
Marcus tried opening his mouth again. “This is some misunderstanding. I was just taking my girl…”
Connor didn’t let him finish his sentence as his boot connected with the bald man’s groin.
The sound was sickening. The man folded sideways and toppled onto the carpet, curled up like a dying insect.
Marcus howled like he was being choked to death and the remaining guests scampered around like wildly fluttering bees.
“What does she matter to…you? I bought her and…”
Connor’s leg lifted and he aimed for another kick right where Marcus was clutching his balls, two hands trying to gingerly cover it.
“That’s how you kick,” Connor said flatly.
He still wasn’t looking at me but I somehow knew he was talking to me.
“Huh?”
I stared at him. My hands were shaking against the door and my throat was tight.
My body had been running on adrenaline for the last few terrifying minutes of the stupid chase Marcus was playing with me and now my body just seemed to have crashed momentarily.
I opened my mouth to say thank you, or I’m sorry, or anything at all.
“Get up,” he said, still facing the men.

I pushed myself off the wall. My legs felt like they belonged to somebody else. There were three Connors again in front of me but I tried to focus on the one in the middle.
The bald man had started crawling backward. He looked at Connor’s face, saw something there, and put on the wobbliest smile I’ve ever seen.
“Alpha Ashford,” he wheezed. “Sir. I didn’t know she was with you. It seems to be just some big misunderstanding. I’d never…”
Connor took one step toward him as Marcus looked behind Connor to the men he called his friends or aides, all standing like statues near the couch.
The hooting and name calling had stopped. Connor wasn’t even looking at them yet they all had a petrified look on their faces, apparently as confused as me as how the wasted alpha heir stood all alert and imposing in front of their boss.
“You brought just five men to kill me? Five?” Connor asked aloud like he was truly disappointed with Marcus.
Connor squatted down on the floor, bringing himself eye–level with the bald man who was now growing furious at being mocked and insulted.
“K..kill you? What are you saying, alpha? I didn’t even know you were around” Marcus tried feigning it again, earning a scowl from Connor.
“You kept shouting so fucking loudly about your lousy plan, the entire city must have heard it. And you thought I would just what…let you get me drunk? Pathetic!”
Meanwhile, the smile on Marcus‘ face died. Something else moved behind the man’s eyes, the panicked calculation of someone who’d run out of good options and realized his cover was blown.
He didn’t try to feign anything anymore as one of his hands shot out toward a fallen bottle.
“I can still kill you!” he seethed, swaying the bottle that he slammed against the wall, making glass rain all over the floor.
Connor reached for his wrist and turned the jagged, broken ends of the chipped bottle towards Marcus whose eyes widened in fear.
“I’d like to see you try”
Connor began slowly, leisurely directing the broken wrist towards Marcus‘ groin as the bald man struggled in
vain.
He tried to use both his hands to stop Connor’s who tilted his head to the side, staring at him furiously.
“Nooo!!”

Connor grit his teeth, shoving the sharp ends of the bottle towards Marcus‘ groin and stopping it just a hair’s breadth away, just to show him that he could.
“You…you were wasted. I saw it myself”
