I didn’t decide to actively run from him because my legs just did it.

“Make him work for it!” I heard another shout as the few men got up from their chairs, some even standing up on them to get a better look.

Meanwhile, their bald boss began chasing me, laughing hard.

“Oh my, didn’t know you are this slippery”

The others began clapping and cheering for the bald man, some trying to encourage him, some giving me tips on how to evade him.

“Bet she’s fast!”

They were actually laughing like this was just a game of chase but my heart was thundering wildly.

The bald man cracked his knuckles and smiled at me, slow and hungry.

“Well?” he said, hiding the fact that he couldn’t run behind me on his fat legs any faster than I could from him.

“I’ll give her some headstart.”

I didn’t wait for him to finish the sentence and just jumped off the side of the stage in the wobbling heels Bob’s girls had shoved on my feet, and bolted between the tables.

I dodged a waiter with a tray of glasses who went spiraling down, making them all laugh like it was a sick joke.

I clipped a chair leg and I hopped over someone’s purse, looking behind me every few seconds as I heard heavy footsteps and that awful laughter..

“That’s it, sweetheart! Keep going!”

My head was swimming and my vision was getting blurry.

“Faster!”

The music thudded on like nothing was wrong.

Around me the other girls kept dancing at their tables, hips rolling in slow easy circles, barely glancing up.

A few guests were still lingering and Baldy was more than happy to provide them with some entertainment even as his men kept subtly emptying the packed room.

“Help, please help me!” I cried out, hoping someone would hear me.

A woman in a silver dress flicked her eyes toward me but looked away again. A man in a booth raised his glass to me like this was all part of the show.

It’s a game, I realized, with a sick lurch. To them, my fear and helplessness was a source of joy, like a prey being hunted.

I ducked around a pillar and tore through a narrow gap between a couch and a table.

Someone shouted “Grab her!” I frantically ran and collided with a table. As a result, a drink went flying and splashed the back of my legs.

“Why are you doing this?” I gasped, not stopping. “Let me go!”

Fuck, I hated being so weak and vulnerable.

I didn’t see the leg of the next table until it was too late.

My toe slammed into it and the room tilted.

I threw out my hands, but there was nothing to catch, and I hit the floor hard, palms scraping carpet, and my mask slipping halfway off my face.

For half a second I just lay there, breathless.

Then the footsteps slowed.

I pushed up onto my elbows and twisted around.

The bald man stood over me, his shadow stretching across the floor, and blocking the light.

He wasn’t even out of breath like I hoped he would. His friends were gathering behind him, grinning like kids at a sideshow.

I scrambled backward on my hands, dress riding up, and my mask half dangling from one ear.

The carpet was sticky under my palms as I still kept pushing my clammy hands to move.

He slowed down considerably, leering at me and picking a glass from the nearest table to take a swing.

“Ahh, looks like the chase ended”

I looked around frantically and a second later my back hit something solid.

There was a wall behind the table I hadn’t noticed earlier due to my fear.

“Where do you think you’re going now?” he asked mockingly, earning a laugh from his friends.

He crouched in front of me, knees cracking, his face coming too close.

He smelled like cigars and stale whiskey. Every cell in my body recoiled and I desperately tried to slide but then he thrust a chair to my side blocking me.

His eyes were small and wet, and he smacked his lips together greedily, his tongue sticking out to lick his lower lip again.

“You made me run,” he frowned. “That was rude.”

“Please.” I whispered. “I’m not supposed to be here. It’s a mistake.”

“No mistake.” He tilted his head. “I paid a lot for you, sweetheart. A very high price for someone shy and timid like you. But don’t worry, I like to experiment so you will enjoy it.”

“No, let me go! This is wrong!”

“You should have thought about it before joining Bob’s group. Now, its time to make me happy because I always get what I pay for.”

He reached out and I ducked, crawling from between the space in his legs and going to the other side.

He turned around wildly, getting annoyed now.

“Don’t be like that,” he tried to put on a fake smile. “Be a good girl and obey, and I’ll make it nice. You’ll like it. I promise.”

Nobody was supposed to say those words to me…except the guy who clearly wasn’t bothered by my dilemna despite being in the same room.

I was torn between having to save Connor and smacking his head on a wall to wake him up to reality.

Baldy, meanwhile, looked at his watch and signalled his men. “Go, get him while I get my prize”

I flinched so hard my head hit the wall.

His men put down the bottles, straightened and then slowly but surely turned in one direction- of Connor.

Then suddenly Bob appeared out of nowhere and clapped his hands. “Okay girls, come on, time to wrap up.”

He slowly started pulling them back as Marcus‘ men started advancing towards Connor because how could Bob let his assets be spoiled, except me, who he had no use for.

Around us, the noise of the club blurred into a hum. Everything felt far away except his breath on my face and the pounding in my chest.

‘Think Sienna, think!”

My hands were shaking. My legs were water. And then, out of nowhere, a scene flashed in my mind of me and Connor in the gym and then in the open forest, of him telling me to focus, to not slouch and aim for the weak

spot.

I recalled Connor standing in the gym with his ruler, snapping at me about my stance. Connor pinning my wrists to a wall and telling me to earn his respect.
