“Stop throwing my clothes!” he said but my tongue got tied up because I realized we were close again.
Too close.
I could see the flecks of gold in his dark eyes and smell the delicious scent that clung to him. Something unfurled low in my stomach and I was acutely, painfully aware that I was wearing nothing but a towel.
His eyes dropped to where I was clutching the towel, then snapped back up to my face.
“This is my room,” he said again, but his voice was rougher this time. “My bathroom. My clothes. And you’re standing here in my towel, throwing things at me like a spoiled child.”
His words got my tongue working again. They always did.
“I’m not spoiled,” I protested weakly. My words lacked the bite.
“No,” he agreed. “Just incredibly difficult.”
We stared at each other for a long moment as I willed my mind to think of anything except how sharp his jawline was.
Why did this incredibly annoying man had to look so devastatingly handsome? Could he not have grown to look like the cruel, arrogant person he was on the inside?
His eyes searched mine for a while and then he sighed, released my wrist, and turned back to the wardrobe.
He rifled through it quickly, pulling out a pair of jeans and a hoodie–a smaller size of the same gray one I’d thrown at his face.
“Here,” he said, shoving them at me without looking. “These are from when I was younger. Might be closer to your size.”
I took them, our fingers brushing for a second.
“Thank you,” I said quietly.
He grunted and turned back around, facing the wall again.
I quickly dropped the towel and pulled on the clothes, trying not to think about the fact that Connor was standing less than ten feet away.
The jeans were still about two sizes too big, if I had to guess, and the hoodie hung off me like a dress. But they were better than nothing.
I tried to tighten the belt on the jeans, fumbling with the buckle.

“You need help?” Connor asked, still facing the wall.
“No,” I said automatically.
But the belt wasn’t cooperating, and after a few more seconds of struggling, I let out a frustrated noise
“Yes,” I admitted. “Maybe.”
I heard him chuckle, and then he was turning around.
His eyes swept over me, taking in the oversized clothes, and something in his expression softened.
“Come here,” he said.
I walked over, and he reached for the belt, his fingers brushing against my stomach as he threaded it throu the loops properly.
I gasped because that touch was electric and sent sparks racing across my skin.
I tried to cover it with a cough, but from the way Connor’s lips twitched, I don’t think I fooled him.
“Ow”
He pulled the belt tight but loosened it a bit after realizing it pinched me.
“There,” he said, stepping back.
I looked down at myself and couldn’t help but laugh.
I looked ridiculous, like a child playing dress–up in her father’s clothes.
The jeans were bunched at my ankles, the hoodie sleeves hung past my hands, and I was pretty sure I could fin another person inside this thing with me.
“I look like a clown,” I said.
“You look like you,” Connor said, and there was something in his voice that made me look up:
He was watching me with an expression I couldn’t quite read.
“Are you saying I always look like a clown”
His shoulders sagged. “So dramatic.” Then after a pause, he asked, “Shall we? gesturing toward the door

We walked down the hallway, my feet shuffling in the too long jeans, and I was about to ask Comin a safety pin or something when I heard voices

the end of the hall.
I recognized them immediately. Aaron and Sandra were screaming at each other.
I couldn’t make out the words, but the tone was unmistakable. Sandra’s voice was sharp and accusatory Aaron’s was defensive.
They were arguing and I think it was about me, probably.
And instead of feeling guilty or worried or concerned, I felt…absolutely, shamefully delighted.
A grin spread across my face, and I practically skipped the rest of the way to the front door.
Connor glanced at me, one eyebrow raised, but didn’t comment.

We walked outside to where his car was parked. It was a sleek black sedan that probably cost more than my parents made in a year and I climbed into the passenger seat, still grinning.
Connor got on the driver’s side and started the engine, pulling out of the driveway without a word.
The silence stretched between us as we drove, but I was too busy replaying the sound of Aaron and Sandra’s fight to care.
They were fighting because of me, because of the fact that Aaron had been jealous when he saw me with Connor.
Maybe Connor’s ridiculous fake dating plan would actually work.
