“I mean just look at me”

Connor’s eyes flicked toward me once, then back to the road. “You look fine”

“I am not fine, Connor, I’m wearing…” I gestured helplessly at myself, at his coat wrapped around my body, “…this. If my mom sees me coming in wrapped in your coat at midnight she’s going to ask questions I don’t have good answers for.”

“”You were wearing that ridiculous dancer thing under it,” he continued like he hated every delayed second spent in the car when he could be with anyone else instead of me.

“It’s late. She won’t notice. You can tell your mom you felt cold…”

“You’re not listening…”

“..so you borrowed my coat. Your mother won’t notice.” He continued as if I hadn’t spoken at all.

I didn’t answer right away.

He glanced over, caught my silence, and something in his expression sharpened. “What?”

“I’m not wearing anything under the coat.” I blurted out and whatever snide remark was about to greet me died on his tongue as he blinked, his eyes widening a little.

“I took it off,” I admitted, heat crawling up my neck.

“In the car while I was waiting. It was torn and uncomfortable so I just… I threw it in the back”

He blinked. Once. His gaze dropped to the way the coat sat on my shoulders, to the bare line of my legs, then cut sharply to the back seat where the crumpled dancer dress lay forgotten.

Something dark and heated moved through his expression before he locked it down.

He jerked the wheel and the car took a hard right, away from the turn that led to my parents‘ street.

The sudden motion threw me sideways. My shoulder hit his arm and for a second I was too close again, close enough to feel the tension running through him like a live wire.

I straightened all on my own, adjusting the coat with my pulse skittering wildly.

“Sorry,” I said again, pushing myself upright, my face burning.

Neither of us said anything for a block.

“Maybe I should postpone the visit,” I mumbled to myself, filling the thick quiet because someone had to.

“Until I’m wearing something that won’t give my mother a heart attack. I…should go tomorrow morning maybe…”

I saw him grip the steering wheel hard as he muttered.

“This wouldn’t have happened if you’d stayed home like I asked you to.”

The coldness in his voice scraped raw. All the leftover fear and fury from the club surged back up.

“So this is my fault?”

“Of course it is. You shouldn’t have been there at all.”

“I can’t believe we are doing this again”

His voice grew irritated. “Since you are still in denial of the ruckus you caused, yes, we are doing this again”

I couldn’e believe him.

I turned fully to face him, index finger pointed at myself before I turned it to stab the air around him.

“I said sorry but you didn’t. You didn’t even ask me once if I was okay when I did multiple times.”

“Nobody asked you to” He snapped.

“Yes of course” I nodded, hair flying all around my face. “Why would you even think it was your fault? Not like you exhausted me in training on the very first day, annoyed the hell out of me and since that day all I am trying to do is talk and communicate but you shut me off”

“Sienna, dont” He warned me.

“Don’t ‘sienna‘ me. You are so cold, so damn arrogant and I don’t know whats your problem because…”

“You” he said sharply “are my problem”

I felt taken aback by that sharp jibe but I refused to back down. “Likewise. You have been nothing but a headache, and you are just like all the stupid asshole alphas who think everybody should worship the ground they walk on.”

His eyes turned to me sharply.

“Is that so?”

I nodded, wanting to bite back even if I could see the faint scars on his arm, the brush of lipstick on the shell of his ear.

“It is very much so”

He gripped the wheel tighter, jaw working, and when he spoke again his voice had dropped into something low and rough, almost pained. “Your mouth,” he began, “and your body are not on the same page right now.”

I stared at him. “What is that supposed to mean?”

He turned his head. “Your body is craving mine. Stop lying about it.”

“It means,” he said, eyes flicking briefly to me and then back to the road. In the low dashboard light his eyes looked almost black, “that your mouth keeps telling me how much you hate me. And your body has spent the last five minutes trying to climb into my lap in your drunken sleep.”

Heat and anger tangled so tightly in my chest I couldn’t separate them.

“Oh yeah? You know it’s my wolf who keeps doing that. I personally hate you. I can’t wait to get rid of you just like you can’t wait to throw me out of this car right now…”

Suddenly a horn blared in our direction and we both looked at a car speeding towards us.

“Watch out!”

He wrenched the wheel at the last possible second as the car drifted and the tires protested.

The world tilted in a sickening sweep of streetlights and dark trees. My hands flew to the dashboard as a sharp sound of fear tore out of me.
