Sienna

I wasn’t sure when exactly I fell asleep or when the car door unlocked with a soft click.

But somehow the familiar scent of him reached me through the fog of sleep.

I was very vaguely aware of the deep, solid heat of the tall, broody and deliciously annoying man who got into the driver’s seat and the engine roared to life.

I snuggled further into the coat, pulling itself closer to me, trying to curl myself into a ball on the co- passenger seat.

I was cold and my body ached a little.

Something made my half–conscious mind want to press closer to that heat when I felt soft fabric brush my bare knees.

Even asleep, I knew it was him.

My head tipped toward the warmth without permission. My fingers curled into his sleeve. Something slipped out of my mouth, maybe his name, or maybe a drowsy, unguarded complaint about how unfair it was that he could smell this good while being so impossible.

“You’re an idiot,” I mumbled, barely audible, more breath than words. “Stupidly… sexy idiot.”

“What?”

I think I heard a question and in my mind we were back in the club, with me being auctioned and him lounging with girls dancing all around him.

“Who goes on a mission…..to dance with girls?” I frowned, hating the memory of seeing Blondie and the others circle him like hungry vultures.

“Sienna, go to sleep” I heard him say even while he was dancing with the girls.

How rude of him!

I jabbed a finger in the air. “No, you go to sleep. You…you…annoyingly sexy f…fake boyfriend”

There was no response but I imagined him staring at me with his mouth half open. He had shut up as he should.

But fuck why was he still with those other girls?

I stalked upto him angrily, yanking his hand away from the air that was about to land on some girl’s shoulder.

“Noo!”

I shouted and somewhere I heard him shout. “Sienna, let go!”

I shook my head. “I won’t”

How dare he behave like that? But then why was the club suddenly spinning. Had I drunk too much?

One second I was standing straight in front of him, the other I felt the world tilt as I careened to the side.

Something that sounded awfully like a horn blared into my ears and then I was jerked hard, almost getting slammed into the warm but stiff wall onto my side.

“Ow” I winced, holding my head with both hands as the world continued to spin. Shaking my head, I blinked furiously and tried to focus on the lights shining in front of me.

But two seconds later, I realized there were no dancing girls around me, nor the club. I was in a car that had jerked to the side and off the tarmac, going into a dirt patch.

I tried to focus again as I heard sharp and loud sounds that felt like my skull was ringing. I dazedly looked up to see streetlights smeared gold across the windows.

A truck blared loudly again right on my side of the window and I blinked hard, trying to focus.

We had somehow gotten onto the wrong side of the road, facing the opposite direction with cars and trucks speeding past us on a busy highway.

I chanced a look outside and saw the car almost hanging by the edge of the road, just a few feet away from slipping all the way down and crashing into the valley below.

“Oh no, Connor, we are going to… I gasped and tried to move backwards and straight into Connor.

“Hold tight” was the only thing he said as his hands stayed firmly locked on the steering wheel.

He gripped it so tightly the knuckles had bleached white as he tried to get back control over the car that seemed to further dip down towards the valley that seemed like a bottomless pit to me.

For a split second the vehicle drifted toward the dark shape of a roadside tree before he corrected with sharp, almost angry precision.

My heart slammed against my ribs.

I was half across the console. One hand was fisted in the front of his shirt. The other had found his forearm, fingers wrapped around muscle like I had been trying to pull him closer in my sleep.

His coat was the only thing covering me, and it had shifted enough to leave too much skin exposed.

I yanked myself upright so fast my neck protested.

Heat flooded my face and I shoved my hair back with clumsy fingers, suddenly aware of every bare inch beneath the heavy fabric.

“Are you…okay?” I asked and he only nodded once, looked on both sides before steering the car back on the road safely.

He could have asked me that too but obviously he wasn’t going to.

Why the fuck was he so cold all of a sudden to me? I straightened, folded my hands on my chest and looked straight ahead.

The moon was shining bright in the dark sky telling me it was well past midnight. Connor kept driving while looking straight ahead.

I chanced a glance at him and saw the way his sleeves had been rolled up. I also noticed the faint nail marks on his arm that rested on the clutch.

He hadn’t examined them yet, just like his white knuckles that were regaining color slowly, the stark bruises now going a deeper shade of red.

“You should get it checked…” I said after sitting in silence felt like worse than being up there on the stage being auctioned.

“…the bruises I mean” I added after a beat.

“I’m fine” he replied in a cold, calculated manner, eyes decidedly on the road ahead.

Why was I even trying to strike a conversation again if he didn’t want to talk to me? I fidgeted with my fingers, realizing this isn’t how I wanted him to be with me for one more minute.

Maybe giving him some space would be good for both of us.

With that in mind, I made the decision.

“Drop me home,” I announced, voice still rough from sleep and the almost crash.

“That’s where we’re going.” His dry rough voice was starting to grate on my nerves.

“I meant my home.” I kept my eyes on the dark road. “I want to go to my parents‘ house.”

A muscle ticked in his jaw but he still didn’t look at me.

After what felt like eons of silence, he asked just one question.

“Why?”

‘Because you are being an asshole yet some part of me wants to shut you up with my lips on yours‘ The words were dancing on the tip of my tongue.
