“You need to learn when to stop talking,” he said quietly.

I looked up at him, still shaky from Asher’s office and too aware of how close he was standing. The marks under my sweater seemed to burn in reminder. My free hand had curled into a fist at my side.

“Then explain,” I shot back. “Because I just stood in front of Alpha Asher and tried to invent a mission I know nothing about, and I would really like to know why you needed me to do that.”

Connor’s jaw flexed. For a moment I thought he might finally give me a real answer.

Instead he said, “You are very impatient.”

“That’s not an answer.”

“What makes you think you deserve one?”

His gaze dropped briefly to my mouth and stayed there for a heartbeat.

And just like that everything from last night–the argument, Lily, the way he had made me admit what I was afraid of–came roaring back.

But by that time, his gaze had already returned back to my eyes.

“And this time, you’re going to listen.”

When did he even let me have his way with him? It was always he who won in the end which was infuriating.

I held his stare, heart still beating too fast, and wondered which version of him I was dealing with now. Was he the one who had been inside me hours ago, or the one who had just called me obsessive in front of his father.

Connor’s head was hovering an inch above mine and I couldn’t focus on his words because his face was too damn distracting.

His fingers gripped mine harder and he shook me a little.

“Let go of me”

In answer, his grip only tightened a little.

“Sienna, its too early to start arguing with me”

“Whatever happened to being nice to me because you are trying to be a better person” I shot back and he kept looking at me for a second, his eyes searching mine.

My gaze shamelessly dropped to his slightly parted lips and that sight so close to me was enough to make my nerves tingle.

Connor shook his head and stepped back, releasing me.

“Do you know you could have just gotten punished for breaking into the alpha’s room? Do you think before you act? Or do you reserve the thinking for later?”

“Later mostly”

“This is not funny, Sienna”

I jutted my chin up. “I know. I am the daughter of an alpha too, in case you are forgetting”

“Precisely” He held his hand up, finger pointing at me. “Why you should know better”

He raked a hand through his messy hair.

“You just left without a word after last night, you didn’t even remind me of training and then Aaron told me you were in the alpha’s office and he wanted to go to a movie with me so I…”

Connor’s head whipped fast back at me.

“Aaron?”

I nodded. “I ran into him and he was telling me about the next trial discussions and that it has gotten a bit complicated…”

Connor narrowed his eyes. “Complicated how?”

“I don’t know” I admitted.

He threw me a disappointed look.

“What? I thought you were going to get punished or put on some stupid trial again so I ran in to defend you”

Connor kicked a stray rock that went skipping over the grass and bushes faraway than I could have possibly sent it.

“Alpha Asher just wanted an update on last night’s mission. Everything was going fine until you showed up and almost messed it all.”

I folded my hands on my chest. “Great, you want me to apologize for caring about you again right?”

“That’s not…”

“You know what?” I jabbed a finger at his chest. “The next time I hear you are in trouble, I won’t care. You can deal with it all by yourself”

He cocked an eyebrow at me. “Just like last night”

The sarcasm was evident in his voice.

I tapped my foot on the forest ground impatiently. I had woken up to sweet memories of last night, blushing

and feeling good but he had to just scowl at me the second his eyes fell on me.

“What were you doing with Lily for two nights, either way?”

His gaze sharpened. “I fucking told you everything you needed to know last night.”

I shook my head. “Not everything”

He now fully turned to look at me. “How about we train and you pass the test? Then ask me whatever you

want.”

I loosened my arms, letting them fall uselessly against my sides.

The forest seemed alive with the faint rustling of leaves, and chirping of birds. We were standing in a clearing of sorts, a few feet away from where the forest began.

I looked down at myself. “I am not wearing training clothes”

Connor shook his head. “You won’t need them today”

I grew nervous all of a sudden. Gym and strength training was hard but fighting his aura was incredibly harder.

I curled my fingers into fists. “So you are going to use your aura on me again?”

I suddenly felt the need to change into something light and breathable because last time I sweated profusely and had gotten dirt and twigs stuck all over me so I didn’t feel wearing a sweater was a good choice.

“Scared already?” Connor asked smugly.

“Not really. So what do I have to do. Fight against your commands?”

He pushed his hands in his pockets. “First you have to close your eyes.”

“What?”

“Stop arguing and do as I say”

I tried not to roll my eyes, gave him a look and let my eyelids flutter shut. I stood there for what felt like eons where he didn’t speak anything.

“Are you going to start?” I asked irritably when I couldn’t stand idly any longer.

When he still didn’t answer, I opened my eyes to see him standing in the same posture, looking anywhere but

  1. me.

He instead pointed at a bush a few feet away from us to our left.

“Do you see that bush over there?”

I followed his pointed finger with my gaze. “You asked me to close my eyes, how can I see it with my eyes closed?”

He sighed. “Now close your eyes and try to see it again. In your head.”

Huh?

I looked intently at the bush, tried to remember the general shape of it and closed my eyes.

“What do you see? Tell me”

I breathed out. “The bush, obviously”

“Describe it to me” His reply was unfazed.

What was I even supposed to describe in a bush?

I tried anyway. “Its a small bush, with twigs and leaves sticking out of it like a weird shapeless cloud.”

“And?” He probed further.

“And?…uh, and its green” I managed to say.

“Keep going”

It was just a stupid bush, I didn’t find anything worth describing about it.

“I don’t know, it’s like dark green at the bottom and a slightly lighter shade on the top”

I waited, hoping he would finally tell me why he was asking me to describe a freaking bush but all I was met with was silence.

For all the times I hated his lectures, now would have been a good time to deliver one rather than making me stand stupidly.

“And?”

I groaned mentally. “And its one of the several thousand bushes in the forest, a very forgettable, trivial one”

Connor took such a long pause that I thought he wouldn’t speak at all. But he finally did, before I heard the sound of him sighing.

“I am sure there’s more to it”

I couldn’t stand with my eyes closed anymore so I opened them, stared at the bush and then back to him.

“Why don’t you describe it if you know better? Lead by example so your trainee knows what she is missing?”

Connor kept his eyes pinned on me.

“Its almost chest–high for you, around a metre and a half wide. The left side is denser and lighter green which means it receives more sun and water. The right side has older leaves and cracked branches. That tells you how the canopy above is shaped and where the open ground is.”

I blinked at him.

“You can also see three clean snaps at the top that were a result of strong gusts moving through here regularly. In a fight or a chase, that same wind carries scent and sound farther than you expect.”

I looked at the bush again, wondering how on earth he had noticed all of that.

“There’s also a spider thread on the outer left branch which means something small is already using this bush for cover. Where there’s one web, there are usually more. Quiet places like that are where smaller predators or prey hide. When hungry you might find a rabbit as a snack in the forest”
