We talked for a few more minutes in which Jane extracted a promise that I’d text her before going anywhere with strange men in the future before hanging up.
I lay on my bed, still wearing Connor’s clothes, and tried to figure out what the hell I was going to say to him.
I’m sorry I assumed the worst about you based on my own prejudices.
I’m sorry I’m a complete disaster who can’t seem to stop putting her foot in her mouth around you.
None of them felt adequate and I rubbed both my temples with my fingers, trying to think hard of a solution.
My phone buzzed again but this time it was Aaron.
Aaron: We need to talk
I stared at the message, feeling absolutely nothing.
Twelve hours ago, a text from Aaron would have had me analyzing every word, every punctuation mark, trying to decode what he meant and what he wanted.
Now I just felt tired and pushed the phone away from me. But then the phone buzzed again which I ignored. It continued to buzz for a few seconds, telling me how progressively impatient Aaron was growing until the buzzing stopped altogether and then it started ringing.
Urgh. I received the phone.
“Where are you, Sia? Why are you not answering my texts?”
“Not now, Aaron”
His impatience turned into something softer. “Sia, please. I am worried about you.”
When he spoke like that, it almost made me feel guilty.
“I’m fine. I just need to sleep a little”
“Not before you promise me that you are never going anywhere near Connor again”
Despite the anger and frustration, I felt a bubble of laughter rise up inside
“Sienna, please. Just listen to me. Connor doesn’t care about you. He’s just using you to get back at me for something. That’s what he does. He manipulates people and plays games…”
“Yeah you’re repeating what you already told me a million times since childhood”

I was visibly getting annoyed.
“Because you are not listening!”

“Aaron, I’m not in the mood to talk right now. I’m going to catch some sleep. Bye” I disconnected and turned my phone on silent mode.
I pulled Connor’s hoodie tighter around myself, breathing in his scent, and replaying our conversation minutes ago.
Sighing I closed my eyes to not think about him but I failed spectacularly.
“Goddess damn it,” I muttered into my pillow.
How had everything gotten so complicated?
Three days ago, my biggest problem was figuring out how to make Aaron notice me instead of Sandra.
Now I’d been assaulted, saved, caught in bed with my childhood bully by the guy I’d been in love with for years, gotten into a fight with said guy’s girlfriend, insulted my rescuer, and was maybe going to fake dating the person I was supposed to hate.
My life had become a terrible supernatural romance novel.
And I was the idiot protagonist who kept making things worse.
I grabbed my phone from where I’d thrown it and turned it back on.
Mercifully, there were no more messages or missed calls from Aaron. And there were none from Connor either.
Now why did I expect any from him?
I stared at the contact details mom had forwarded me alongwith the address and saved his number in my phone then decided to stare at it instead of sleeping.
My thumbs hovered over the keyboard, wondering if I should send him a message.
‘I’m sorry‘ sounded too simple.
I typed a longass essay, read through it three times and ended up deleting it.
I was spectacularly bad at this!
I grabbed the water bottle, took a few sips to calm myself down and tried again.
“Hey, I’m sorry for being a dick. You didn’t deserve that. Thank you for last night. And for covering for me with my mom. I owe you.
I hit send before I could overthink it and waited for what seemed like hours anxiously but my inbox stayed decidedly void of any new messages.

It stung that he was ignoring me which was a first because I had never even paid attention to him before.
We went all our lives cursing and bickering with each other and I had never lost sleep over it until now.
I eventually gave up waiting and changed out of Connor’s clothes, carefully folding them and setting them on my desk.
I’d have to return them eventually, preferably after he stopped being mad at me.
If he ever stopped being mad at me.
I was just pulling on my pajamas when my bedroom window opened.
I screamed and grabbed the nearest weapon which happened to be my math textbook and
Aaron was climbing through my window.
“What the hell?” I hissed. “You can’t just break into my room!”

“Your mom wouldn’t let me in the front door,” he said, landing gracefully on my floor. “She said you needed rest and I should come back tomorrow.”
“So you decided to climb through my window like some kind of creep?”
“I needed to talk to you,” Aaron said, his face serious. “And you won’t answer my

“Sia, please.” He took a step toward me, and I took a step back. “I need to have this conversation right now. Did you drink or eat something weird?”
