Chapter 26

Sienna

I blinked, confused. Better?

She wasn’t angry or furious at all like I had expected, just genuinely concerned.

Your headache, she said, pulling back to look at me with concern. Are you still not feeling well? Should I call the pack doctor?

Myheadache?

How did she even know that was the exact lie I was gonna sell her?

Mom frowned. Connor said you had a terrible headache at Jane’s house last night. That you were feeling too sick to come home. I was so worried about you.

Connor had covered for me and basically lied to my mother so I wouldn’t get in trouble.

If not for Connor, I would have driven over there myself,Mom continued. But he promised me he’d keep an eye on you and make sure you got home safely today. Or I would have gotten Dad involved.

Connor promised you?I repeated faintly, not believing my ears.

Yes. He called me last night to let me know you were okay. He is such a thoughtful boy. I know you two had your differences when you were younger, but he’s really matured into a fine young alpha.

I tried to process this information and groaned. Oh Goddess!

What’s wrong?Mom asked, touching my forehead. Do you still have a headache? You look pale.

I’m fine,” I said quickly. Just tired. I think I’m going to go lie down for a bit.”

Of course, sweetie. Get some rest. And make sure to thank Connor when you see him next. It was very kind of him to look after you.

Yeah,I said weakly. Very kind.

I trudged up to my room, feeling the weight of my stupidity pressing down on me.

I tried to mentally count all the favors I owed him in barely two days since his arrival and boy the list was already quite long.

And I’d repaid him by essentially calling him a rapist.

1 flopped facefirst onto my bed and screamed into my pillow.

My phone buzzed and I quickly grabbed it, hoping irrationally that it might be Connor.

Sadly, it wasn’t him but Jane bombarding me with text messages.

Jane: OMG ARE YOU ALIVE???

Jane: I’ve been trying to call you all morning!

Jane: Did you get home okay? Please tell me you’re not dead

I typed out a response with shaking fingers.

Me: I’m alive. Barely. Can you call me?

The phone rang ten seconds later.

SIENNA MILLER,Jane’s voice came through at a volume that could probably shatter glass. Where the HELL have you been? I’ve been freaking out! Do you have any idea how worried I was? Nate said you left with Jake but you didn’t answer all night and I thought

Jane,I interrupted. I need to tell you something.

She went quiet. Oh Goddess. What happened? Are you okay? I don’t like this tone of yours.

It’s actuallyit’s kind of a long story.I said quickly

I have time,Jane said immediately. Tell me everything.”

So I tried to condense all the events from the past two days which was a herculean task given my frazzled state that took more than an hour. No idea why, I didn’t tell her about the kiss or the fake dating proposal.

By the time I finished, I was very thirsty and gulped down an entire bottle of water. Only now did I realize that Jane had gone completely silent on the other end of the line.

Jane?I asked hesitantly. Are you still there?

I’m here, she said, her voice tight. I’m just trying to decide if I should be mad at Nate for setting you up a creep, or mad at myself for letting you go off with him.

It’s not your fault,I said quickly. You didn’t know.

with

I should have known,Jane said. I should have done a better background check or something. Oh Goddess, Sienna, when I think about what could have happened, I want to slap myself.

But it didn’t,I said firmly. Connor stopped it.

Connor saved you,Jane said slowly. Connor Ashford. Your childhood bully. The guy you’ve hated for the last decade.

Yeah.

And then you spent the night in his bed.

And then you insulted him by implying he was a creep who would take advantage of drunk girls.

I winced. When you put it like that, it sounds really bad.

That’s because it is really bad,Jane said.

I know,I groaned. I’m an idiot.

You’re not an idiot,Jane said, softer now. You’re justconfused and hurt. And dealing with a lot of complicated feelings about Aaron and Connor and everything that’s happened.

I don’t have complicated feelings about Connor,I protested weakly.
