I was spared the task of answering his question because then Sandra showed up, looking all concerned.
“Aaron, I was looking for you everywhere. What are you even…”
She began and then her eyes fell on me and Connor who were fully clothed yet the bed behind us told her what she wanted to know.
“Really? Do you have to spoil every good moment of your so–called best friend?”
“Excuse me?” I shot back.
Aaron placed a hand on Sandra’s shoulder and tried to pacify her. “We gotta go, babe. The guests are arriving.”
She cast one angry look at me and grabbed Aaron’s wrist to tug him forward.
“I am not going to let you spoil this evening”
She began pulling him and Aaron cast me a miserable look. “Get dressed and come downstairs quickly.”
I gave him a nod but he looked at Connor as well. “You too”
Connor didn’t say a word but I saw the way a muscle in his jaw ticked. When Sandra and Aaron were out of earshot I turned back to Connor.
The door lay like a dead body in the middle of his room that nobody wanted to touch and was definitely an
eyesore.
“Your door…” I began, trying to fill the awkward silence between us. Connor continued combing his hair smoothly and wearing his watch.
“Dont bother. Someone will be here shortly to fix it.”
He had not even completely finished saying that line when there was a knock on the doorframe.
The head housekeeper, Maria, dressed in her uniform looked at the mess and sighed. “Good lord” “See” Connor muttered and turned around when he was apparently done staring at himself in the mirror.
His hair was combed to perfection, not a single strand of hair amiss. A part of me longed to run a hand through his hair just to turn them messy like seconds ago.
“I’ll get that door fixed, and also move all your belongings to a temporary room….” Maria began but Connor shook his head.
“There’s no need Maria, I am leaving.”

Was he going somewhere?
“But the party you haven’t been to one in ages” Maria muttered again and Connor reached for his coat to put it on without answering her.
And I tried to recall if I had seen him during any of the celebrations at the Ashford manor. I had heard from Aaron in passing that Connor visited at times, to one of their other estates but I didn’t really remember him being actively around in the family.
It was as if he was not even a part of the Ashford family though he was the eldest son and the firstborn of Alpha Asher.
Maria stepped in through the room like it was made of lava, careful to not step on any debris and said. “Let me”
She reached for the coat and helped Connor ease into it then turned him around to inspect him and tied his tie and brushed over his coat, chasing away imaginary dust.
“You look handsome as always” She said, beaming at him and he gave her a smile, a genuine one and pinched her cheek.
“Not prettier than you” She blushed and they spoke to each other so softly that I only kept staring at them for a while.
I didn’t know Connor had a sweet side to him. I had never seen him complement someone effortlessly without being sarcastic.
I never thought he would be sweet to the house staff because Aaron barely acknowledged their existence.
My feet hit something and Maria was the first to look at me, realizing I was still there.
“Ah, you should probably get ready as well, sweetie”
That gave me something to do than stare so I quickly started looking around for my bag but realized it was lodged under the broken door.
I bent over and grabbed the belt to yank it towards me.
“Oh sweetie, relax. I’ll get the servants to lift it up and clean…”
But I was already tugging at it and half of my bag had already been pulled out from under the door.
“Nah, there’s no
need. I got
this”
Connor leaned back on the edge of the dressing table, watching me with amusement.
“You really should listen to Maria”
But I flicked my hair away, angrily tying them into a messy bun and gritted my teeth.
“Like I said, I’ve got this”
