He didn’t nod or say yes and I somehow wondered if he had another girl waiting for him which was ridiculous because I had no claim on him.

Then I wondered why I would even think about having any sort of claim at all on the person I claimed was the worst in my life when I was little.

But then he had said there was an ‘us‘. Had he meant it as a joke, something to piss Aaron off? Or had he meant it like something real?

“We must hurry, the alpha and luna are already on their way.”

Maria led me down a hallway I’d never been in before, her heels clicking against the marble floors hurriedly.

“This way, dear,” she said, glancing back at me with a warm smile. “We keep a selection of dresses in the guest wing for occasions just like this.”

“You keep a selection of dresses?” I repeated, trying to wrap my head around the concept. “Like… multiple dresses? Just sitting around?”

I had been to the mansion multiple times but this was the first time I needed to borrow a dress.

“Oh yes.” Maria pushed open a door at the end of the hall. “The Luna is quite generous with guests who might need something to wear. And you’d be surprised how often someone spills wine on themselves at these

events.”

She flipped on the lights, and I stopped dead in my tracks.

The room was massive and it felt like I was stepping into a high–end boutique.

No, scratch that.

It was like stepping into the kind of boutique where they served you champagne while you shopped and didn’t have price tags on anything because if you had to ask, you couldn’t afford it.

One entire wall was lined with elegant, expensive–looking gowns in every color imaginable. Silk and satin and fabrics I couldn’t even name were all hanging in perfect rows.

The opposite wall was covered in floor–to–ceiling mirrors with the kind of lighting that made you look good even if you’d just rolled out of bed after three hours of sleep.

There was a plush velvet settee in the center of the room, and a dressing screen in the corner, and what looked like an entire jewelry display case near the window.

“Holy Goddess,” I breathed.

Maria chuckled. “I know it’s a bit much. But the Luna does love her events, and she wants everyone to feel

their best.”

I turned in a slow circle, taking it all in, and felt my stomach twist with discomfort.

“Maria, I don’t think I should try any of these because they all look really expensive”

“Nonsense.” Maria was already moving toward the wall of dresses, and scanning the options.

“The Luna knows you, dear. She’s known you since you were a little girl running around with Aaron. She adores you. She wouldn’t mind at all.”

“But…”

“No buts.” Maria pulled out a soft pink dress with delicate beading. “Now, what about this one? It’s lovely, isn’t it?”

It was almost see–through in certain lights and had a neckline that plunged so low I’d probably get arrested for indecent exposure.

“That’s… very nice,” I said diplomatically. “But maybe something a little more… covered?”

Maria pursed her lips, considering, then hung the pink dress back up.

“Alright. What about this?”

She pulled out a navy blue dress that looked marginally more modest with a high neckline, long sleeves, and floor–length skirt.

But it also looked like something my grandmother would wear to a funeral.

“It’s… conservative,” I said carefully.

“Too conservative,” Maria agreed, hanging it back up. “You’re young. You should wear something that shows that.”

“I was thinking more along the lines of ‘decent‘ than ‘conservative,” I muttered, but Maria was already pulling out another option.

This one was bright, fire–engine red, with a slit up the side that would probably reach my hip and a back that was entirely nonexistent.

“Absolutely not,” I said before she could even suggest it.

“Why not? Red would look stunning with your coloring.”

“I’d look like I was trying to seduce someone’s grandfather.”

Maria laughed. “That’s a bit dramatic, don’t you think?”

“Have you seen that dress? It’s basically advertising that I’m available for certain… activities.”

And even as I said that, the image of Connor tearing that dress from my body flashed in front of my eyes.

“It’s fashion, dear.” Maria argued as I shut my eyes to shove that image away.

“II’m not wearing that.”

Maria sighed and hung the red dress back up, but I could tell she was losing patience.

“Sienna, darling, you need to wear something that makes a statement. Something that shows you belong here, with Connor, at an event like this.”

I looked up at her in surprise.

“You know…I mean Connor and I…are not…” I was fumbling for words but she chuckled.

“Connor told me to find something appropriate for you even before you tore that dress today.”

“He did?”

“Yes. When you were arguing with the other girl, he pulled me aside and told me to look after you.”

I took a few seconds to process who she meant by the other girl.

“Sandra, you mean” I asked, just to be sure.

“Yeah, her. I hope… I shouldn’t be saying this but I hope Aaron doesn’t really stick with her.”

Oh so somebody else also hoped the same as me.

Curiosity got the better of me so I couldn’t help but ask.

“Why do you think so?”

Maria lowered her voice to a whisper. “She isn’t fit to be a Luna, my dear. She treats all the househelp and servants like slaves. A true Luna isn’t like that.”

Damn, so she was already harassing the staff that had served the alpha for generations? No wonder she pushed that poor florist on the floor.

“I’d rather see you as the future Luna of this pack” Maria said suddenly and I blinked.

“Me?”
