He’d come through the office door in the time it took me to descend four stairs, turned me gently and had me against the stairwell wall with one hand braced beside my head before I’d finished processing that he’d moved.

Thishe said, looking at my face with an expression that was amused and genuinely curious in equal measure, is the second time you’ve caught my eye and immediately tried to leave. What’s going on?

He was close, his cedar and warmfabric scent doing the thing it always did to my breathing, which I was managing through sheer determination.

His eyes searched through my face, looking for an answer.

Nothing,I said. I was looking for Aaron.

The corner of his mouth moved. You spoke to Aaron twenty minutes ago when he came downstairs.

I stared at him. How do you know that?

I know most of what happens around me.” He tilted his head slightly, confirming the doubt that he had indeed seen me watching him.

I must look like such a creep to him.

Try again.He said.

I didn’t have another excuse. What I had was the image of that girl’s expression and the feeling in my chest that I was not going to admit to out loud, which left me with no viable options.

For the first time, I was thankful to Sandra for the much needed interruption as my phone buzzed and her name flashed across my screen.

Uh, she planned a girls day out for today and invited me.I explained.

Connor glanced at it and then back at me, and straightened slightly, giving me room. Go have fun then,he said. I’ll be here drowning in work.

Who asked you to?I said. You could take a break as well. Have some fun

Did you get some sleep last night after your mom slapped you? Are you okay? I wanted to ask but those words wouldn’t come.

Is that an invitation?

It’s an observation.”

Hmm.He looked at me, eyes slightly darker. What kind of fun are we talking about?

The kind where you leave the office. Fresh air. Human interaction that isn’tI gestured toward the glass wall, whatever that is.

For your information, I interact with humans regularly

Does the girl with the mouse count?

It came out before I could stop it.

Connor’s eyes sharpened fractionally, and then I could swear I saw his lips twitch just a little.

She’s an intern,he said. I was showing her the reporting software.”

Reporting softwares are pretty basic to be honest. She can figure it out on her own eventually.

Did you climb all the way up to talk about reporting software?

I said nothing because he got me there. Luckily, Sandra was being annoying again with calls.

GoConnor said, nodding toward the stairs. Call me if Sandra tries anything funny.

I won’t need to call you.I jutted my chin up.

Call me anyway.

I looked at him for a second, hyperaware of the fact that if he leaned just a little, his lips would be on mine again.

Enjoy your software tutorial,I said in a voice harsher than necessary and walked down the stairs. I felt him watching until the landing curved and took me out of his sightline.

I had gone there to talk to him but somehow the sight of him smiling playfully at that girl who stared at him like a kicked puppy irked me. And then I kept wondering why the hell did it bother me.

Because we are fake dating, duh

What else could it be?

I made my way down the stairs and out of the mansion to see not just a regular car but a stretched limousine in the driveway.

Sandra’s friends were busy clicking pictures in and around the limousine while Jane stood awkwardly to the side.

I instantly felt a pang of guilt for leaving her alone.

SorryI mouthed and rushed to stand beside her.

Took you a lot of time, you were alone in the bathroom right? She asked, wiggling her eyebrows.

Of courseI said and tried to change the topic. Looks like I didn’t miss much.

Jane shook her head. Nuhuh. All the girls are busy pretending to be princesses and flaunting wealth that isn’t theirs.”

I snorted and just then Sandra finally noticed me. She gave me a look.

Thank Goddess you are finally here. I was starting to wonder if you chickened out.

Her friends giggled like hyenas and I gave them an all too sweet smile.

No chance, Its not everyday that I get to splurge my best friend’s money.

Sandra gave me a smile that didn’t meet her eyes, obviously noticing my subtle dig but chose to ignore it.

Sandra and her friends climbed and settled onto the good spots, placing their bags and stuff right beside them which left just a small corner for me and Jane to sit.

Can you put your bag on the side?I asked Lily who gasped.

You did not just ask me to put the limited edition, handcrafted LV bag on the floor.”

I tried not to roll my eyes.

The side, not the floor. Not like either is made of lava
