She shrugged.

“I am not even doing anything. It’s a beautiful post. Truly speaks to the theme of inclusion and friendship.” She put her phone down angrily. “I’m very relaxed.”
My phone buzzed a second later.
Connor: I don’t see you in Sandra’s post.
Me: I thought you had better things to do than stalk her social media.
Connor: I am just ensuring my girlfriend is truly having fun and all I see is something that might be a cushion.
Me: I’m the cushion.
Connor: You should be in the picture.
Me: I genuinely don’t mind.
Connor: I mind.
I stared at that for a moment and then very deliberately typed ‘go back to work‘ and put the phone face down and looked at the garden and told my heart to behave itself.
Apparently, she could sense my unease but attributed to an entirely different reason.
“How are you doing?” Jane said, in the voice she used when she was actually asking.
“I’m confusing myself,” I said honestly. Connor called me his girlfriend and despite having agreed to fake it the word did something to my heart.
“About which one.”
“Both,” I said. “Neither. I don’t know.” I looked at the pond below us catching the light. “I think I need a therapist.”
“I’ve been saying that for two years,” Jane said, with the satisfaction of someone long vindicated. “Not because anything is wrong with you but because you’ve been carrying too many things and you deserve somewhere to put them down.”
“When did you get wise?” I threw her a surprised look.
“I’ve always been wise. You just don’t listen until things get bad enough.” She paused. “Also, breaking up with Nate clarified a lot of things emotionally.”

“He vouched for someone whose hands ended up somewhere they weren’t welcome. I’m not interested in being with someone whose judgment works like that.”
She said it with conviction. “I’m a better friend than these bitches either way. Also…” she gestured subtly at the man who had just appeared beside the outside wall, one of the wellness staff waiting at a polite distance, …being recently single in a place like this has a specific restorative quality.”
“At least you are having fun then” I replied as she smiled at the staff member who smiled back.
“I feel like I will,” Jane nodded.
Marcus reappeared, moving around the arc of chairs, and checking in with each of the girls one by one.
When he reached Camille she stretched her arms over her head and said, “The foot massage was really nice and now my neck and back wish the same treatment because they are absolutely destroyed..”
Marcus nodded enthusiastically. “Sure enough, I can ask the girls to arrange…”
But she cut him off abruptly.
“Well the girls are nice but I doubt their delicate hands would be strong enough for my back.”
Marcus paused, wondering what to answer when she added with a coy smile.
“Do you have anyone with really strong hands? Like, genuinely strong.”
Becca seemed to have caught on because she added. “Oh yes, we would all love some really strong massage. You know…a full body massage.”
The girls eyed each other and laughed mischievously.
Marcus received it with complete professionalism and only offered a slight smile of amusement. “Of course,” he said, and stepped to the side and gave someone a quick call, spoke for a minute while the girls kept looking at him expectantly.
When he was done he made a brief gesture and then a few men came through the garden door.
All of them were broadly built, all in fitted white uniforms and charming. Sandra’s friends were extraordinarily quiet for approximately one second as their mouths salivated.
1 eyed Sandra who didn’t seem too averse to the idea.
“Who would like to pick first?” Marcus asked but his eyes stayed on Sandra who turned shy.
“I don’t want a full body massage. Just back would do.”
“Oh come on. Why not? You have been so stressed, girl. It’s just a massage, not like you are doing anything else…” Lily coaxed her but Sandra shook her head.

“Yeah but I am soon to be wife of Aaron Ashford. I can’t indulge in anything even mildly inappropriate. I can’t risk tarnishing the ashford pack’s image now can I?”
Sandra spoke and her friends showered her with even more compliments about how righteous and loyal she
was.
That made Jane snort and all the girls turned to look at me and Jane.
“Why did you even bring these lowlifes here, Sandra?” Camille frowned, looking at us as if we were nothing but trash.
“Yeah, just because she calls your boyfriend her best friend, she doesn’t get to enjoy what you do. Girlfriend always comes first no matter how long you’ve been friends with the man you can’t seem to take your eyes off.”
Portia said and I repeatedly told myself to not take the bet but Jane was already annoyed and bored.
“Says the bitch who planned to steal that art piece by the corridor.” Jane was fuming and Portia instantly scowled.
“What did you call me?” She got up and marched towards Jane who placed her hands on her hips.
Marcus sensed an incoming fight and tried to calm everyone down.
