I looked out the window and somehow my brain brought up the memory of Connor saying this exact line in that rich, husky voice of his. The way he had touched me everywhere, sucked me dry and left me wanting

more.

But then I recalled the photographs of him and Elise, pressed my lips together and watched the road.

The Ashford estate appeared through the gates, and Aaron parked and we walked up the stairs to see Sandra appeared in the main hall.

She was wearing an ivory bodycon dress that fit her a bit too tightly, her hair and makeup immaculate, and Aaron crossed to her and kissed her on the mouth.

Sandra kissed him back and then looked at me smugly.

Hey, babe,Aaron said, already pulling back to look at her. You look perfect. Come on, we should leave. We are going on a double date tonight.”

Double date?Sandra said, her eyes still on me.

Yes, I told you about this friend I wanted Sienna to meet, right? We can go have fun and a cozy dinner too if you don’t mind

Oh why would I say no to spending more time with you babeShe cooed and stepped back.

Then I’ll go change. She added, smoothing her alreadysmooth dress. This is too casual for a double date.

But you look incredible

I’ll look invincible, she said, and turned to me like she had not noticed me earlier.

Oh, Sienna. I didn’t see you there.” Her eyes moved over my dress and she asked. Where did you get that?It was a gift,” I answered without giving her any details because I had none.

A gift. She tilted her head. It’s from Valentino. Their fall collection to be exact. She looked at the dress again and added. This collection started at twenty thousand, I think. But this version with the embroidery is.she appeared to consider it, well over thirtyfive. You have very generous friends.

Aaron made a sound that was the beginning of an interruption.

Sandra didn’t pause.

Actually, she said, Aaron and I were in their flagship store just last week, weren’t we?She looked at him with

a wide smile. You picked out that cream jacket for me. Do you remember?

Uh maybeHe began but when her smile began to waver he immediately corrected himself.

Meanwhile, I looked at the floor, trying my best to not react to her subtle humiliation and indirect comment of how Aaron splurged on a nobody like me.

Sandra,Aaron said, and his voice had an edge. I just remembered I bought you that fiftythousand dollar dress from Balenciaga’s spring collection. The one with the diamonds on the neckline. He looked at her. Go put it on. You looked like a goddess in it and you know it.

Sandra beamed at him, clearly pleased to have been put on a pedestal.

You’re right, she said. I’ll wear just that for you.And walked back up the stairs without hurrying.

I stared at the wall as her footsteps receded down the hallway.

Ignore her, she gets competitive at timesAaron said quietly, behind me.

It’s fine,I said.

He put his hand briefly on my shoulder and I moved away before I could stop myself, because no matter how sweet he was to me, in the end he chose her over me.

I smoothed down my dress for no reason when I heard the sound of incoming footsteps and was surprised to see Alpha Asher walk out of his study.

He came down the main stairs and I bowed instinctively. I had barely interacted with him a few times because Alpha Asher was always busy with work or meetings so I wasn’t entirely sure how to behave around him.

Alpha Asher was typing something on his phone when he looked up, noticed the two of us and spoke to Aaron.

I need you to give me last year’s report on our trade with the western packs and tell me how much we need to export this quarter.

Aaron glanced at me. Dad, we were just about to head outside

I have an important meeting in an hour,Alpha Asher said like Aaron had never spoken. Can you give it to me or do I have to call Connor?

Aaron looked at me with an expression of apology that I waved off, and hurried upstairs leaving me and Alpha Asher in the main hall.

I thought of a polite way to excuse myself when he continued typing something on his phone and turned around.

You,Alpha Asher said, from halfway down the corridor.

I looked up to see that he was already moving but the word had unmistakably been directed at me.

Follow me,he ordered.
