Chapter 58
Chapter 58

Yukito pushed my wheelchair gently down the long corridor, the wheels rolling quietly over the polished floors, but even without turning around I could feel Tadashi behind me. His presence lingered like a shadow that pressed against my spine, heavy and protective, the weight of a man pacing at the edge of violence and fear.
—
The moment Sasha Kuznetsova disappeared from the mansion, the atmosphere had changed the sharpness that had filled the room when she entered lingered only faintly now, replaced by something darker and heavier, something unspoken and far more dangerous.
A shift in fate. A call to war. A threat that pointed toward one place: Japan.
His home. His blood. His clan. The very land where we meet but for now I couldn’t step foot into because, in his words, “Japan is dangerous for now.”
Yet those danger were stirring now.
When Yukito reached the sitting room near my bedroom, he paused, turning his head slightly to catch Tadashi’s eye. A silent message passed between them – Tell her, she deserves to know.
Then Yukito excused himself under the pretense of fetching tea, although we all knew exactly what he was doing: giving Tadashi the space he needed for something heavy.
The door closed with a soft click.
Tadashi stepped forward, the firelight catching the hard lines of his jaw, casting long shadows beneath his eyes. He looked like a man carved from battle scars and quiet storms dangerous, exhausted, profoundly beautiful in the most devastating
way.
He did not speak immediately.
—
Instead, he came to me, lowering himself slowly to his knees, taking my hands into his own as though he feared they might vanish if he was not careful. He lowered his head until he was at my eye level, preparing himself for a confession he seemed to believe might cost him something.
But I did not fear him. I did not fear the truth. I feared only that he believed he carried this burden alone.
“Tadashi,” I whispered with my broken, imperfect voice, “do not kneel for me.”
His hands tightened around mine.
“I kneel,” he murmured, voice soft yet trembling with sincerity, “because I only kneel for what I treasure.”
My breath faltered. The room tilted. And before I could recover enough to answer, he continued.
“You must understand something about Sasha Kuznetsova,” he said, his eyes never leaving mine, “so that you know she means nothing now, and so you are never blindsided by her again.”
I nodded once, calm, steady, resolute.
“Tadashi… I am not afraid of your past.”
Something inside him cracked – not painfully, but with a soundless exhale of relief. I saw his shoulders soften just enough for vulnerability to slip through the cracks of his walls.
“She was not my lover,” he said.
I blinked, not expecting that.

“She wanted to be, he continued, “and she acted like she was whenever it suited her. But I never gave her my heart. I never gave her loyalty. And I certainly never gave her what I give you.”
His thumb brushed my knuckles a small, reverent confession.
–
“She comes from a powerful Russian business family. Our clans collaborated years ago, back when I was still learning how to survive politics that demanded either manipulation or blood. She believed that because we worked together, because we shared certain nights-”
He paused… I could see his jaw flexed, but he did not avert his gaze.
“Yes,” he admitted quietly. “We shared a bed several times.”
He was not ashamed or defensive. He was simply telling the truth.
“And she assumed,” he finished, “that she could shape me into what she wanted. A husband. A symbol. A weapon her father could control.”
Understanding spread through me – not jealousy, not fear – clarity.
“So she came here today,” I murmured, “because she thinks she still has some claim over you.”
He nodded once.
“But she does not,” he said firmly. “I cut ties with the Kuznetsov family years ago. Sasha is a relic of a life I outgrew.”
I stared into his dark, restless eyes, feeling the truth of his words.
“And I… am your present.”
He inhaled sharply. Not in shock – in relief so raw it almost hurt to witness.
He leaned forward and rested his forehead against mine, exhaling shakily as though breathing me in restored him more than any medicine or rage-fueled vengeance ever could.
“Yes,” he whispered. “You are everything that is now. Everything I choose. Everything I return to, even when I lose myself. My present and future, Naomi.”
His fingers tightened around mine.
“But Naomi,” he said, voice deepening, turning heavier, “what Sasha said is true. It seems Reiko has returned to Japan. And she is not alone.”
I waited for fear to rise – but none came. Instead something inside me sharpened, solidified, braced itself.
“What is… happening?” I asked softly.
Tadashi hesitated – something he almost never did.
Then he exhaled slowly.
“There is unrest in the clan,” he said. “Whispers. Doubts. Challenges to my authority. Enemies claiming I am weak because I stayed here for you.”
I frowned, confusion rising. “Weak?”
His laugh was bitter, humorless.
“Yes. They believe love makes me vulnerable. They believe you make me vulnerable.”

My chest tightened, but I held his gaze without flinching.
“And do I?”
He froze.
For a long, fragile moment, he could not speak.
Then he reached out, cupping my face between his palms, holding me as though he feared I might disappear.
“You do not weaken me,” he whispered. “You anchor me.”
His thumb traced my cheekbone, gentle, worshipful.

“You are the only thing that keeps me from becoming what they fear. Without you…” His voice faltered, raw truth slicing through it. “Without you, I become a monster.”
I placed my hands over his.
“Tadashi,” I whispered, “you are not a monster. You are a man who loves deeply. And that frightens them because they cannot control it.”
His breath trembled.
“The elders demand I return to Japan,” he murmured. “They want me to answer their accusations. They want to test me.”
“And Reiko?” I asked softly.
Hatred flashed in his
eyes.
“She has aligned herself with the traitors. She believes if she destroys what I love, I will crumble. She thinks breaking you will break me.”
The words lingered like smoke in the quiet room.
I felt certainty settle inside me – not fear, but resolve.
“So there is no choice,” I said quietly. “You must go back to Japan.”
His fingers trembled on my skin, fear finally breaking through the steel of his control.
“Yes,” he whispered, “but I cannot leave you. Not after what happened. Not while you are healing. I cannot-”
“Tadashi.”
He went still.
“You are the head of your clan,” I said. “You cannot abandon them. And you cannot allow Reiko to stir chaos without you there. You must go home and finish this.”
He shook his head desperately.
“And you?” he whispered. “Do you expect me to leave you behind? Alone?”
“I will not be alone,” I said gently. “Your people are here. This house is safe. I will heal.”
His eyes widened – horror, fear, denial all twisting together.
“No-”

Chapter 58
“Tadashi,” I said, firmer now, “I know exactly where I stand in your heart. You do not need to prove it by destroying yoursel
He closed his eyes, inhaling as though the truth I spoke was painful but necessary.
When he opened them again, I saw devotion and torment in equal measure.
“If I leave you,” he whispered, “I will not sleep. I will not breathe. I will not know peace. Why don’t you come with me?
I touched his jaw gently.
“You know I would slow you down. You know your attention splits when I am near. Last time proved it,” I whispered. “You fought with your heart half turned toward me. You protected me instead of protecting yourself.”
His breath caught.
“You need to finish the war,” I added softly. “And come back to me.”
He swallowed hard. “Naomi..
“Yes?
He took my hand, pressed his lips to it, his eyes closing as though the touch grounded him.
“You know I will come back,” he said, voice trembling with a depth that reached my bones. “No matter what I must do. No matter who stands against me. No matter what they demand
His voice lowered further, raw and unguarded.
“I will always come back to you.
I smiled — calm, steady, certain.
“I know.”
He exhaled shakily, then leaned forward and kissed me – a kiss filled with fear, promise, devotion, and a vow stronger than any spoken oath.
