"Exactly, Sloane. You can't get back in the water. You need to head back to The United States immediately..."
Hearing their chorus of concern and seeing the tension etched onto their faces, Sloane quickly put the pieces together. Her condition was no longer a secret.
She pressed her lips together, offering a helpless, wry smile. "Don't worry about me. I'm honestly fine."
She gestured toward Garrison with her chin.
"Dr. Foster gave me an inhibitor injection before the dive. Nothing bad is going to happen."
Garrison's face was pale with tension, his jaw clenched tight. "The inhibitor wears off tomorrow."
"But I already finished the mission today." Sloane flashed a brilliant, almost mischievous grin. Garrison couldn't remember the last time she had smiled at him like that.
For a split second, he was transported back to a swimming arena years ago, watching a vibrant, spirited girl standing victorious on the championship podium...
"Since the mission is over, you are coming back to The United States with me tomorrow for treatment!"
Garrison reached out, gripping Sloane's wrist so fiercely his knuckles turned white. He took the sample tube from Professor Harrison, held it up for a brief inspection, and lowered it.
"This is The White Microbe, and highly active at that. We can use it to cultivate The Vitas Strain... and still have enough left over for dedicated research."
"With this..."
His gaze shifted back to Sloane, tracing the hollows of her cheeks, her pale lips, and finally resting on the harsh red mark left by the heavy diving collar around her neck.
"I can cure you," he vowed, locking eyes with her as if tethering his soul to hers. "Trust me."
Sloane stared back at him.
