The Year I Stopped Being His novel Chapter 238

Professor!

Josh's eyes nearly bulged from their sockets as he tore through the water, swimming madly toward the sinking man.

He finally reached Professor Harrison, but the older man had gone entirely still. A cold dread plummeted in Josh's chest.

He grabbed the Professor by the collar, hauling him upward. The older man felt devastatingly heavy, like a waterlogged sack of concrete. Kicking furiously, Josh stroked with one arm, using the other to maintain a death grip on the collar as he fought his way toward the surface.

Hold on, Professor! I've got you!

Please, just hold on!

Splash!

The moment they breached the surface, Josh gasped greedily for air, his burning lungs feeling like they had been scrubbed with raw fire.

Professor Harrison's head lolled against Josh's shoulder. His eyes were firmly shut, his lips a horrifying shade of purple, slightly parted in a silent, final gasp.

Panic-stricken, Josh supported the man's jaw and furiously swam for the nearest solid ice. He squeezed so hard his nails practically dug into the older man's flesh.

They finally reached the edge.

Josh slammed the Professor's hands onto the ice, pinning them down before vaulting himself out of the water. He immediately spun around, grabbed the man's wrists, and dragged him up. Professor Harrison's limp body slid onto the ice like a piece of deadwood, completely unresponsive. Josh dropped to his knees and pressed his ear to the man's chest. Nothing. No heartbeat. No breathing. Absolutely nothing.

"Professor!"

The blood instantly froze in Josh's veins.

Right, CPR. I need to do CPR!

He scrambled into position beside his mentor and began chest compressions. One, two... thirty. Right, rescue breaths!

Wait, was it one breath or two?

He had undergone extensive, professional first-aid training, but right now, his brain was completely short-circuiting. He couldn't think straight.
