The Year I Stopped Being His novel Chapter 239

Diego clawed his way onto the ice just in time. Soaking wet and shivering with blue lips, he staggered over. The sight of Professor Harrison lying lifeless on the ice drained all the strength from his legs, and he crashed heavily to his knees.

"Professor... Professor!"

"But you... you know how to swim. How did this happen? How..." Diego reached out, wanting to touch the man's cheek, but his trembling hand hovered uselessly in the air.

"He... he drowned trying to save The White Microbe..."

"It's my fault... It's all my fault. I didn't pull him back in time," Josh choked out through wracking sobs.

Hearing Josh's confession, a sickening wave of guilt and agony crushed Sloane's chest, robbing her of breath.

Garrison smoothly transitioned into perfect CPR compressions, his voice cutting through the panic with chilling focus.

"Epinephrine."

"Go get me the Epinephrine!"

His command cracked like a whip. Diego blinked, his gaze instinctively snapping toward the fractured ice, where the severed tail rotor of their sunken helicopter bobbed pathetically in the slush—a grim tombstone marking its watery grave.

"Dr. Foster, your helicopter is sitting at the bottom of the lake! Where the hell am I supposed to get Epinephrine?!"

Garrison didn't miss a beat. His tone was furious but perfectly articulated through gritted teeth.

"I left a supply in The United States base station. Right side of the entrance, second cabinet, inside the emergency kit."

"Go! Now!"

Diego stared at Garrison's icy, unyielding eyes and gave a rapid nod, his lips trembling.

He scrambled to his feet and sprinted madly toward the supply station.

His boots slipped on the slick ice, sending him crashing onto his knees. He ignored the bruising impact, hauling himself up and sprinting forward again, wiping out twice more before finally throwing himself against the station's entrance.

Bang!
