The Year I Stopped Being His novel Chapter 251

A suffocating wave of sorrow washed over Sloane. It felt like an eternity since she had last truly looked at Garrison. He had lost so much weight. The line of his jaw, his ears, his body—they were littered with new scars she couldn't account for...

And she hadn't noticed a single one.

If he hadn't used his own body to shield them from that bullet... would she be the one lying there right now? Or would it be Josh?

Crack—

Sloane felt the thick ice around her heart finally fracture, a tiny fissure splitting the frozen surface...

But she had no time to dwell on it.

Leaning down, she pressed her lips gently against Garrison's forehead. It was fleeting, as soft as a snowflake landing on his skin.

It lasted for only a second.

Garrison's eyelashes fluttered, but he didn't wake.

Josh stood directly behind Sloane, watching the entire exchange. His hands slowly balled into fists at his sides, though he kept his mouth shut.

"Wyatt, Cassandra, could you keep an eye on Garrison for a minute?" Sloane asked, turning around.

Wyatt and Cassandra nodded.

"We got him. Don't worry."

She then looked at Josh. "Josh, come outside with me."

Josh and Sloane headed into the supply station and sat side-by-side on a bench. Outside the window, the night was still pitch-black, thick and impenetrable as ink.

Sloane grabbed two energy drinks. She handed one to Josh, popped hers open, and took a sip.

The liquid was sickeningly sweet, reminding Sloane of the milkshakes she and Josh used to share years ago.

"You really grew up today, Josh."
