"Where is she?"
Having just regained consciousness, Garrison's voice was rough, scraping like sandpaper.
Wyatt immediately stepped forward, placing a hand on his back while reaching for his pulse with the other. "Lie back down. Your wound—"
"Where is Sloane?"
Garrison ignored him, repeating the question. His voice was lower this time, a dark, heavy demand.
A sudden, crushing premonition coiled tight in his chest, making it impossible to breathe.
He locked eyes with Wyatt. Wyatt was forced to look away, unable to hold his gaze.
"Dr. Foster, you just woke up. You shouldn't be moving."
Garrison's heart plummeted. He turned to look at Cassandra. She was young, unable to hide her emotions. Her eyes were already red, her lips trembling.
"Where is she?" he asked for the third time.
The tears finally spilled down Cassandra's cheeks.
"Sloane... she went back in the water."
Garrison's chest seized.
His mind went completely blank, but his body moved on pure instinct.
He shoved the blanket off and swung his bare feet to the floor. When he stood, the excruciating pain radiating from his side nearly made him black out, but he gritted his teeth and stumbled out of the cabin.
Wyatt grabbed a winter parka from the seat and chased after him, Cassandra hot on his heels.
"Dr. Foster, put your coat on!"
The freezing air outside hit Garrison like a solid wall. He was barefoot, his bandages already soaking through with fresh blood from his violent movements. But he didn't feel the cold, and he didn't feel the pain. All he could feel was his own heart hammering against his ribs in a desperate attempt to shatter his ribcage.
Then, he saw Josh.
