The Year I Stopped Being His novel Chapter 75

It felt as if a wad of wet cotton was lodged in Garrison's throat. He couldn't utter a single word.

He suddenly remembered that summer night two years ago when Archie was forcibly taken back to his mother.

That night, Sloane had knelt before him, crying and begging him not to take Archie away... offering to do anything he asked.

At the time, he only thought that since Sloane hadn't even graduated college, she lacked the ability to properly raise Archie.

He hadn't stopped for a second to consider just how much her heart was breaking...

"Dad, I haven't... seen Mom in a really long time." Archie's voice pulled Garrison back to reality.

A cautious, probing look flashed through the boy's large eyes. "Did Mom... not want us anymore?"

"No."

Garrison let out a sigh, his voice coming out a little hoarse as he finally revealed his reason for taking Archie out today. "Mom is... sick today. She's in the hospital. After we eat, Dad will take you to see her, okay?"

"Really?" Archie's eyes lit up, followed immediately by a flash of worry. "Is she really sick? Should I... bring her a present? I know she'll love my Legos! Even if she can't build them, she can look at them!"

Seeing his son's excitement, a very faint smile finally touched the corners of Garrison's mouth.

At seven o'clock that evening, Garrison held Archie's hand as he pushed open the door to the hospital room.

The moment he opened the door, he froze.

There were several other people in the room—Professor Harrison's family, and Josh Jace.

A large bouquet of flowers sat on the bedside table. Abigail Harrison was holding Sloane's hand, her eyes red as she spoke warmly. Professor Harrison stood beside her, his face full of solemn gratitude.
