"Someone just called you," he said coldly.
Penelope finally noticed that Theodore was holding her phone. She looked at him in total confusion. "Who could have called to make you this mad?"
"Some guy named Coco."
"Coco?" Penelope racked her brain. "I don't know any girl named Coco."
"You don't know him, huh?"
Theodore gave a stiff nod and hit redial.
It rang exactly once before the person on the other end eagerly picked up.
"Hey gorgeous, didn't we agree that I'd be your tour guide today and show you around Bridgemere? But when I called you earlier, a man answered. Don't tell me you've already found someone else to entertain you. Where does that leave me?"
The voice coming through the speaker was male, dripping with exaggerated affection.
Penelope practically choked. She glanced at Theodore, whose expression had visibly dropped another ten degrees.
"You're a grown man, why the hell is your name Coco? And for the record, I never agreed to go anywhere with you, so stop spouting nonsense!"
"But you said I was cute last night! Why are you acting so cold now? Coco already has feelings for you. You're breaking Coco's heart."
"Ugh, keep your heartbreak to yourself. I think I'm going to be sick."
"Hmph, you're so mean!"
The guy hung up. The memory suddenly crashed into Penelope's mind. While she was drinking with Marin last night, a guy dressed like a college student had approached them, asking her to buy him a drink.
At the time, Marin had been completely wasted and boldly declared that she was paying, even ordering the guy a premium bottle. But her wallet was in the car, so Penelope had been stuck footing the bill.
The guy must have pegged her for a wealthy target and spent the rest of the night hovering around her. The club music had been deafening, so she hadn't actually heard most of what he said. Just to get him to leave, she had absentmindedly nodded along to whatever he was blabbering about.
And that led to this disaster.
Penelope carefully explained the entire sequence of events to Theodore, but his face remained like stone.
