Chapter 297
“I would never forget that,” I said. “But you want to enslave werewolves. That is my kind.”
“You are different than them.”
“I’m not. And Max, Thorne, Kairos… Valentin

“Do not utter that name,” Renault growled. “He is a traitor. As is your mother.”
His clear hatred of the people I cared about removed any and all longing to be with him. When he’d been Neo, I’d…
No.
He wasn’t Neo anymore. Maybe Neo had never existed at all.
“I can’t go with you,” I said.
He searched my face, all emotion leaving his own. “You know that means, then. You have considered it?”
“It means we’re enemies,” I said.
His eyes narrowed. His grip on me tightened, near painful.
“The next time we meet, my mate, it will mark the beginning of the ultimate war between vampires and werewolves. And you. Will. Lose.”
He released me then. I fell backwards, but Max was there and caught me. He lowered me to the ground were Kairos was finally stirring, growling even as he struggled to wake.
Renault raised a hand and I held my breath. Was he going to leave? Was he going to stay? I didn’t know.
I grabbed one of Kairos’s legs and Max’s hand. “Thorne!” I called.
He must have seen what I was going to do. He came running to be, shifting as he reached me, and wrapped his arms around my shoulders. Once I was touching all three, I looked at Renault one more time.
I shouldn’t have hesitated. He could have stopped me.
But he didn’t. He just watched, expressionless, as I used the gift he helped me train to teleport my mates and I away from him.
Valentin’s POV
“How can the tomb be empty?” Victoria demanded. Valentin had already described the scene many times on the phone as he ventured back to the Academy, but now that he was here, it seemed as if Victoria wanted to hear it again, in person.
“I’m telling you what I saw,” Valentin said, and told her again about the mangled door, the empty dais.
“It doesn’t make sense.”
They were in Valentin’s office. He was weary from travel but had yet to sit down at his desk.
“Only Zora could have broken the curse we had placed on him,” Victoria said.
“We knew the curse was weakening,” Valentin reminded her. “It’s not so outrageous that he would have broken free of his own power after all this time.”
“If he accomplished that, he is already stronger than we feared.” She sighed. “I hope Zora is ready.
Valentin did too. He hadn’t been there to help train her, which he regretted, but the urgency of this situation kept calling him away.

“Perhaps she has consummated the bond with her fifth mate,” Victoria said. “We can only hope that he has unlocked her full potential.”
Valentin wasn’t so sure, especially after talking with the other mates, and learning how much they distrusted this mysterious
Neo.
“I want to try to buy her more time,” Valentin said. “As much as we can manage.”
“That will not be as easy as –”
