“Honestly, it’s a good thing you cut ties with them,” James said as he handed Scarlett a bottle of water. Even now, he couldn’t stop mentally cursing the Joyner family for being spectacularly blind.
Then again, in a strange twist of fate, he almost owed them a thank–you.
Back when Scarlett had been desperate to cling to her place in the Joyner family, she’d turned down invitation after invitation from Jandale without hesitation. No matter how promising the offers were, she’d refused them all.
Now, with those shackles finally gone, there was nothing holding her back.
The sky was wide open.
His mentor, Professor Hamilton, was already preparing to establish a brand–new lab in Jandale. And now, for the first time, working together didn’t feel like a distant possibility—it felt close. Real.
So James asked, casually but with genuine curiosity, “What are you planning to do next?”
Scarlett took the bottle, twisted the cap open, and took a slow sip. Outside the window, buildings and trees blurred into streaks of color as the car sped along.
“I’ve been developing a drug for blood disorders,” she said quietly. “The mouse trials still need another fifteen days of observation.”
James immediately understood.
That was Scarlett to a fault–meticulous, stubbornly principled. Once she started something, she finished it. No shortcuts. No half measures. Even now, cornered and exhausted, she would see it through to the end.
“I’ve got a lecture coming up at your school,” he said. “If you need anything, just call me.”
Scarlett nodded without speaking, her eyes half–lidded with fatigue.
She looked tired. Bone–deep tired.
Back on campus, Rebecca went straight to the lab.

The moment she stepped inside, several classmates swarmed her.
“Rebecca! Was that really James Logan earlier?”
“Do you have any pictures? Come on, show us!”

Rebecca smiled shyly and shook her head. “Sorry… Scarlett was talking to him the whole time. I didn’t really get a chance to take any close–up photos.”
The excitement in the room instantly dimmed.
“She’s just the mistaken heiress–you’re the real one. Why do you keep letting her steal the spotlight?”
“Exactly. She even accused you of stealing her research! Good thing we were all there to defend you, or your reputation would’ve been ruined.”
“James is obviously here for your cancer project. She just jumped in to take credit.”
“Yeah! The mouse trials only have fifteen days left. Now she’s trying to worm her way back in again?”
“I don’t know what happened to her. She used to be normal. These past couple of years, she’s gotten more and more extreme.”
As the voices piled up, the lab door suddenly swung open.
Professor Miller strode in, white coat flaring slightly with the movement, glasses resting low on his nose. He took one look at the cluster of students and frowned.
“What’s this?” he said sharply. “No one’s recording data? Just standing around chatting?”
The room fell silent in an instant. Everyone straightened, heads lowered.
Only Rebecca stepped forward, her expression apologetic. “Professor Miller, please don’t blame them. It’s my fault. I couldn’t convince James to stay–he was too busy.”
Miller adjusted his glasses, his tone softening. “You saw James? That rascal didn’t even tell me he’d arrived in Trenwyn.”
Rebecca lowered her head, smiling faintly. “Maybe he wanted to surprise you.”
Miller chuckled. Some people might see this as disrespect, but he never let it bother him.
But then another thought surfaced.

A few months earlier, Professor Hamilton from Jandale had called him, hinting–quite heavily -that a Ms. Joyner in Miller’s lab showed exceptional promise, and asking whether she might be interested in joining their new facility.
Over the past two years, Rebecca’s results had been outstanding. More than enough to elevate Miller’s standing in the field.
He didn’t want to lose her.
What he hadn’t expected was Hamilton to send his own student to poach her behind his back.
“Whatever James said,” Miller said evenly, “don’t forget the work you already have. By the way, Rebecca–where’s your paper? Let me see it.”
Rebecca quickly handed over the prepared documents.
Miller skimmed through them—and his eyes widened.
“Rebecca… you never fail to impress,” he said, genuinely astonished. “A completely new approach to cancer treatment? How long until the mouse trials are done?”
“About fifteen days,” Rebecca answered without hesitation.
Miller was ecstatic. If this drug succeeded, it would fill a critical gap in cancer pharmacology- a true breakthrough.
“You’re a genius,” he said warmly. “This could win a national–level pharmaceutical award. When the time comes, I’ll personally submit the patent in your name.”
Instead of jealousy, the room erupted in cheers and congratulations.
Rebecca flushed modestly. “Thank you, Professor. Thank you, everyone.”
Miller handed the papers back, then glanced around the lab.
“Hm?” He frowned. “Someone’s missing. Where’s Scarlett?”
Rebecca stiffened.
She quickly stepped back, lowering her head as if trying to disappear.
“Rebecca?” Miller noticed immediately. “What’s wrong?”
The others couldn’t hold back anymore.

“Professor Miller, while you were away on your exchange program, Scarlett accused Rebecca of stealing her research.”
“We couldn’t just stay silent, so we all spoke up for Rebecca. That’s why Scarlett moved to the side room to work alone.”
Rebecca’s eyes reddened. “Professor, I really didn’t plagiarize anything. We just happened to choose similar topics. If you don’t believe me, the school can investigate.”
Miller slammed his hand onto the desk, furious.
“The thing I hate most is academic fraud–and petty infighting,” he snapped. “She dared to sabotage a fellow student? I will not tolerate this!”
Rebecca hurriedly shook her head. “Please don’t be angry, Professor. I’m sure Scarlett had her reasons. Let’s just forget it. I’m fine–I won’t hold a grudge.”
Her gentle, understanding tone only made Miller more protective.
“No need to defend her,” he said firmly. “Where is she? Tell her to come in right now.”
Scarlett had been delayed–James kept nagging her to go to Jandale–so she arrived later than Rebecca.
She ended up hearing the entire scene from the doorway.
“I’m here.”
Every head snapped around.
They’d been so busy venting that no one had noticed her arrive.
Scarlett stepped forward calmly and met Miller’s gaze. “Professor Miller. Welcome back from your exchange trip.”
Once upon a time, Miller had liked her very much. She was sharp, disciplined, undeniably talented–a rare seedling worth cultivating.
