Pleasedon’t argue because of me,Rebecca said softly, tears shimmering in her eyes. She looked fragile and sincere, the very picture of wounded kindness. It’s all in the past. I’m not going to hold a grudge. Let’s just focus on our research from now on, okay?

Micah, who was already feeling a twinge of guilt, was instantly overtaken by a surge of protective anger.

He turned on Scarlett without hesitation. You didn’t used to be like this. Lately you’ve become more and more unreasonable. If it weren’t for Rebecca being so kindhearted, this would’ve blown up a long time ago.”

Then, as if granting a favor, he added, Professor Miller is here today.Just apologize to Rebecca in front of everyone. We’ll let the whole thing end here.

Scarlett almost laughed.

The senior she’d once bent over backward to supportsomeone she’d helped quietly, repeatedlywas not just blind. His brain seemed completely scrambled.

Apologize?she said coolly. I didn’t do anything wrong. Why would I apologize? Maybe try shaking your brain back into place before you leave the house.

Calvin had originally held onto a sliver of hope. If she admitted fault, he was prepared to give her another chance.

But hearing that answer, the last of his patience evaporated.

You think you did nothing wrong?he snapped. Fine. Then we’ll look at your experiment. If what they say is true, pack up and get out of my team!

Scarlett had entered the university as the state’s academic champion. Even as an

undergraduate, Calvin had noticed her talent and personally arranged a special placement for her in the lab.

She had always cherished that gratitude for his guidance.

So even now, faced with his fury, she didn’t argue.

Alright,she said calmly. Let’s go.

Her composure froze everyone in place.

Since joining the lab, Scarlett had filed multiple patents every year. She had upgraded the affiliated hospital’s medical systems and earned widespread recognition across campus.

Developing a cancer treatmentwasn’t impossible for her.

Rebecca clenched her fists, panic flashing briefly through her eyes.

No one knew Scarlett’s abilities better than she did.

If Scarlett looked this calm, it meant the mouse trials had likely already shown meaningful results.

ThankfullythankfullyI had already made arrangements earlier that morning, right after seeing

James.

As Scarlett brushed past her toward the back lab, Rebecca shot her a mocking glance.

Scarlett paused.

Then she looked back and offered a quiet, unreadable smile.

For some reason, Rebecca’s heart gave a violent jolt.

What does she mean?

Did she know something?

No. Impossible.

Rebecca, let’s go with her,Micah said gently, patting her shoulder. Don’t worry. We’re all on your side.

Seeing how pale she looked, he assumed she must be distressed about confronting Scarlett.

She’s the one who did wrong. Don’t let it weigh on your conscience.

Rebecca took a slow breath and adjusted her expression. YeahI know. Thank you, Micah.

We’re like family,he said warmly. You mean a lot to me. No need to thank me.”

As they spoke, the group reached the far corner of the lab.

Compared to the main lab, the conditions here were downright harsh.

Bare concrete walls. A single exposed lightbulb buzzing faintly overhead. The room was barely four or five square meterscramped to the point where, with one lab table inside, it could

hardly fit more than two or three people.

Calvin frowned the instant he stepped in.

If Scarlett really was the kind of selfish manipulator they claimed, why would she willingly work in a place like this?

On the walk over, he’d assumed she had moved her experiment into his office next door. Since he traveled frequently, it sat empty most of the year.

This setup planted the first real seed of doubt in his mind.

Professor Miller,Micah stepped forward quickly, I was the one who put her here.”

At the time, she kept insisting she hadn’t done anything wrongjust like now. As the senior here, I gave her this space to reflect.

He sighed, as if burdened by kindness. I probably should’ve stopped her experiments entirely. But we’ve worked together for years. I couldn’t bring myself to cut her off completely.

And instead of being grateful,” he added, she doubled downand kept hurting Rebecca.”

As he spoke, his gaze drifted into the room.

He was already familiar with the cramped space, so the size didn’t surprise him.

The condition did.

This place looks like it’s been ransacked…”

Papers were scattered across the floor. Bottles and beakers lay shattered beneath the lab table. The mouse cage had fallen overits door hanging wide. open.

The mice were gone.

What happened here?someone blurted out. Who’s been in this room?

Wait, another voice cut in. To verify the truth, we only gave the keys to Scarlett.”

Micah frowned deeply, utterly confused.

Rebecca forced a strained smile. There’ve been a lot of stray cats on campus lately. One of them probably got in and made a mess. Since the mice are gonelet’s just forget it.

She turned to Calvin, eyes glistening with concern. Professor, please. Let Scarlett move back to the main lab. This place really isn’t suitable for experiments. She must’ve learned her lesson by now.

That sentence snapped everything into focus.

Micah stared at Scarlett in disbelief. You released the mice just to destroy the evidence? Do you have any idea how unstable they are during trials? If they disrupt the local ecosystem, can you take responsibility for that?

The rest of the group erupted immediately, voices overlapping with condemnation.

Calvin’s expression darkened to the extreme.
