Chapter 174 Brothers at War

“Me? Mean?” Toby set across from him, spinning a gun in his hand. His voice was cold. “You should be grateful I didn’t shove you into the trunk.”

“Did you forget who used to take you out when you were a kid?” George finally worked the ropes off his wrists after a long struggle. He tried the car door, but it wouldn’t budge. He turned his head, shocked. “Was I really that bad to you?”

“You’ve got the nerve to ask that?”

Toby’s calm face snapped. His temper flared.

“Every time I went out with you, I ended up in the hospital for days.”

His voice turned dark. By the end, he even laughed, like it was too ridiculous to believe. “One time, you took me to some underground fight club. You threw me into the ring and said I should ‘feel the real heat of being a man. If I hadn’t given up fast, I would’ve been beaten to death in seconds.”

George sounded completely unapologetic. “I was trying to show you how the real world works. Stay inside all day, and you’ll turn into some weird hermit.”

“Shut up!”

“I won’t.”

Alfred covered his ears.

Stuck between them, George yelling on one side and Toby burning with anger on the other, the boy’s mind went blank.

So loud. So, so loud.

No book had ever warned him that having two older brothers together would be this loud.

“As for what happened today, yeah, I’m sorry,” George said, running a hand through his hair. He tried to prove he wasn’t to blame. “But if you had just told me who Maya really was, I wouldn’t have gotten mixed up with Horus and his group.”

“Save your excuses,” Toby said, clearly enjoying this. “Don’t waste your time talking to me, you should think about how to beg Mom for mercy. If you’re lucky and didn’t get kill, I’ll send you to the best hospital in the country.”

Just thinking about going home drained all the fight out of George.

He pressed his face against the car window. He wanted to run but couldn’t. Pitiful and stuck, he muttered, “I don’t want to go home.”

As usual, no one paid him any attention..

The car fell quiet for a moment.

There’s still something I don’t get,” Toby said, staring out the window. More and more police cars were pulling up outside the school. Red and blue lights flashed everywhere, reflecting in his eyes. “How did you even end up targeting her What’s so special about Maya?”

George had always been wild and free.

He liked making friends, sure—but there was no way he’d take an interest in a kid for no reason.

“You mean Maya?” George said, like it wasn’t a big deal. “At first, I just grabbed a random student.”

He leaned back lazily, tracing a circle on the car window with his finger, “Then I thought she looked familiar. Got curious, so I slipped a bug on her. After running into her a few more times, it hit me. I’d seen her before–in a photo.”

“A photo of…?” Toby waited.

No answer.

“Spit it out,” Toby snapped, his patience finally running thin. “A photo of what?”

George’s voice dropped as the image came back to him. “A photo with Edric.”

There had been a time when Edric kept him close, basically babysitting him.

Back then, George hated being stuck inside that big house. He got bored fast. So he made trouble for Edric.

One day he’d shred important papers and scatter them all over the carpet. The next, he’d try tying bedsheets together to climb out a second–floor window, only to get stuck halfway, yelling for help.

Edric never got mad at him.

“Edric?” Toby let out a cold laugh. “What does Maya have to do with Edric? Don’t drag his name into everything.”

To Toby, it sounded like George was just using Edric as an excuse to avoid getting chewed out by their parents later.

“I’m serious. I really saw her in a photo with Edric,” George said.
