Toby listened closely. “But even a mother and daughter wouldn’t look exactly the same. That’s way too much of a coincidence.“1

“That’s why I thought it was weird,” George said. “While I was at school, I kept going to see her now and then”

The whole thing felt strange to him.

He had watched her for a long time.

Even now, he still couldn’t figure it out.

“Alfred, got anything to say?” George asked after finishing the story. He looked at his smart younger brother with interest, waiting for his opinion.

Alfred lowered his eyes. “Do you want the scientific answer or the supernatural one?”

“I’ll take both.”

“The scientific answer is simple. There are only so many ways genes can combine. Sometimes you get a coincidence. And the supernatural answer? You’ve lost your mind. You should go see a psychic.”

George asked, “You don’t believe me?”

“You don’t have any proof,” Alfred said, resting his chin on his hand. His eyes stayed fixed on George. “We also can’t rule out that you’ve gone crazy.”

He and Toby were clearly on the same side.

After all, George acting weird wasn’t exactly new.

Toby had a look that suggested George belonged in the best mental hospital.

Alfred wore a cold look that hinted George should get a priest to perform an exorcism on him.

George had no words.

“So you two teamed up just to mess with me?” he said, clutching his stomach like he was in pain. Then he pressed his face back against the car window.

The glass was cold.

Just like his deeply wounded feelings.

While they were chatting, Raymond finally came out of the school, carrying the girl in his arms. He walked fast. Toby and Alfred got out of the car to meet him.

Gorge took his chance. He tried to open the door and slip away.

But the moment he stuck half his body out, he locked eyes with a group of strong, well–built, trained men.

They stared at each other for two seconds. George slowly pulled himself back into the car.

“Alfred!” Maya ran up and hugged Alfred tightly. Then she peeked over as Toby. “Are you guys okay?”

“We’re fine,” Toby said shortly. “The ones in trouble aren’t us.”

“See the guy in the car?” He tilted his head toward George, who looked completely drained inside. Toby’s voice turned sharp with hate. “Tomorrow, I’m making sure he rots in prison.”

George was puzzled.

“What am I, some prison–type main character?” he complained. The family was talking about him, so he pushed the car door open and got out. “Why does everyone want to throw me in jail?”

Maya looked at him openly.

George’s hair was a mess. He was still wearing a teacher’s uniform. There were dried spots of blood all over his shirt. Just looking at him reminded Maya what he had done at the school.

For a moment, she thought maybe it wouldn’t be so bad to throw this murderer into prison and let him rot there.

But she quickly shook that idea off.

Was George the type to behave himself? No way. A/criminal like him wouldn’t stay locked up anywhere.

“You can send him to prison; he’ll just break out,” Maya said. “Better not risk it.”

That didn’t sound safe at all.

George’s eyes lit up.

“I knew it! You care about me!”

He leaned in and pulled her into a tight hug, rubbing her head like a big cat playing with a fluffy ball. His voice turned warm and playful.

“Didn’t expect this. In this cold, heartless family, my best ally is you, Maya!”

He sounded genuinely touched. To him, kids were just fun.

Maya’s head got messed up from all the rubbing. Her hair was a total disaster.

Then she snapped back to her senses.

Thinking about all the ways he had threatened and messed with her before, anger shot up inside her. She spun around and kicked him hard. “Get lost!”
