It was in that very moment that Edric realized how despicable he was.

Edric had gone numb, and by the time he ran into anyone else, he couldn’t even cry anymore –just a hollow shell of a body swaying as he walked.

Blood soaked his clothes, gluing the fabric together, and there was blood on his face.

He didn’t wipe it off.

Then Edric heard a voice.

“Onyx!”

It carried from far off, with a gentleness he knew well.

It rang out especially loud in the silence of the night, and Edric’s steps halted as he turned toward the sound.

Under the ghostly pale moonlight, a small figure was running toward him.

She’d taken off her coat and held it out in front of her, wrapped around something, a bundle bulging in her arms.

“So this is where you’ve been hiding.”

Then, the moment after she finished those words, Maya’s smile froze slightly.

She’d spotted a man holding a gun.

Maya’s heart lurched, but her face still showed no panic, and her tone stayed even as she ran up in front of Edric and looked him over from head to toe.

She saw the bloodstains on him, and the boy’s trembling fingers and pale face.
