This Time, I’ll Be the Villain’s Favorite Daughter
Chapter 252 I Thought You’re Dead
It was blood on his hands that wouldn’t wash off.
And now, that price was standing right in front of him.
Edric didn’t listen, and his body reacted before his mind could.

The boy stumbled forward and threw every ounce of strength he had into wrapping his arms around her.
His arms clamped around her shoulders, pressing her head into the crook of his neck, his own body shielding all of her behind him.
His back faced the man and the gun.
Edric wished he could pull her entirely inside his own body, so that no one could ever hurt her.
The fear of losing a companion all over again had scrambled his thinking into something almost laughable.
He didn’t want her to die.
The man raised his eyebrows in surprise.
He’d seen Edric afraid before–tears sliding down without a sound, lips bitten white, not making a peep.
But this was the first time he’d seen the kid like this, throwing caution to the wind not to escape something, but to protect something.
Frankly, with Edric guarding her this fiercely, it was hard to make a move.
If he dared lay a finger on the young heir today, his employer would probably blow his brains out by tomorrow.
Teasing was one thing, but if he actually pushed the boy into something that went wrong, he didn’t figure he’d walk off this island alive.
He was here to do a job, not to throw his life away.
The man tapped his finger against the trigger guard, hesitating again and again.
The hunter wasn’t the only one caught off guard. Even Maya was stunned.
She really hadn’t expected that Edric–who came across as gentle on the surface but was more

ruthless than anyone underneath–had such a fierce protective streak as a child.

Ever since she’d recently realized he might be Edric, Maya had found it hard to see him as a normal kid anymore.
She’d seen what he was like grown up–distant, cold, his smile never reaching his eyes.
But the boy holding her now had trembling arms and falling tears, the whole of him like a small animal guarding its food, fierce and pitiful at once.
Maya almost couldn’t break free of his grip.
Where did this kid get so much strength?
This kid, usually so soft and slow that he might even talk half a beat behind everyone else, sure didn’t hold back when it came to hugging.
He’d nearly slowed down her draw.
Maya didn’t dare waste time, and she wrenched a little space free, slid her right hand out of Edric’s hold, reached under her coat, and gripped the gun that was already loaded.
Her left hand pressed against the back of his head, and the girl said softly, “Cover your ears and close your eyes, Edric.”
Edric didn’t even have time to wonder how she knew his name, hearing only a gunshot that exploded beside his ear without warning.
The familiar sound of the shot froze the blood in the boy’s whole body.
His eyes went wide, terrified tears falling one after another beyond his control, his grip tightening until he was almost crushing Maya into his bones.
He thought Maya had been shot.
He thought she was dead.
He hadn’t stopped the bullet, so she’d been killed without mercy, just like the companion before her.
The thought drove into his chest like a knife, hurting so much that his whole body curled in on itself.
Edric knew tears had never bought anything.
He’d cried too many times in front of the people who fell, and not once had it made any difference.

Bang!
A single shot.
The gunman’s body swayed, then crashed to the ground.
Maya lowered her hand and looked at the little head bawling its eyes out.
She was a little unhappy.
That bit of unhappiness had nothing to do with the grown–up Edric, whom she barely knew.
But with Onyx, she had two solid months of friendship, the kind built on relying on each other
to survive.
And when she saw him again, this was the hollow, ghastly state he was in.
“Hey, what are you crying about, Onyx?” the girl asked, her confusion plain. “Are you really this torn up just because he’s dead?”
Edric’s mind stalled in that instant.
As if slowly catching on to something, he loosened his arms and looked at her.
The moonlight fell on the girl’s face, softening the lines of her features.
All at once, the boy couldn’t hold his emotions back any longer, his tears coming harder. “I thought you were dead…”
But she wasn’t.
There was no thick smell of blood.
