Maya wasn’t all that heavy, but the momentum from suddenly throwing herself at him was still considerable.
As it turned out, Alfred had a rock–solid base, and he didn’t get knocked straight over by the impact, instead catching her smoothly in his arms.
Just as she’d figured, Toby was the only one in the family who was hopeless at hand–to–hand stuff.
“Did you miss me?”
Alfred was speechless.
“You’ve gone quiet on me again, Alfred. A man being too smart and too ice–cold isn’t exactly a selling point.”
Maya was set back down, and her feet had barely touched the floor–before she’d even gotten steady–when she heard Alfred say, “I’m very unhappy.”
Maya said, “I can tell.”
“You have to cheer me up.”
“I absolutely will not.
“Let me tell you, I was super impressive these past few days. You couldn’t even imagine what I went through.”
Whenever she was around Alfred, she could never help talking more.
Alfred studied her closely.
The one thing he picked up on right away was that she seemed to have grown up.
He didn’t mean in height, but in her mind.
But Alfred had only just been reunited with Maya, so he didn’t jump to conclusions. He stuck out a finger and lightly poked at the soft hair drooping by her ear. “Who tied this?”
Maya reached up and felt the two crooked, lopsided braids on her head, then said breezily, “I did it myself.”
He spat out one blunt word. “Ugly.”

Maya landed a punch on the top of his head. “You’re not allowed to question me.”
Alfred didn’t dodge and took the punch without making a sound.

He pulled her down to sit on a little stool while he stood, lowering his head to redo her hair into two symmetrical buns.
Maya swung her legs and pushed her luck. “I don’t want buns–I want a half–up style.”
“I don’t know how.”
“You can learn. You’re the smartest person in our whole family.”
Alfred’s breath came out faint. “You sure are a lot of work, Maya.
“Didn’t you get along great with George? I thought you’d forgotten all about me.”
The sour note running through the boy’s words was especially obvious.
Alfred had even started to miss the now–bombed Harmony International School.
At least being at school meant it was still just the two of them, him and Maya, with no one suddenly popping up to fight him for his spot.
But at home…
Why were the useless brothers always increasing?
It left Alfred thoroughly annoyed.
Hadn’t they refused to come home before?
Then they should’ve just stayed away like good little nuisances.
The house was lively today. Wendy had only just closed the door when, not long after, the doorbell rang again.
After Maya finished chatting with Alfred, she ran over to her parents. Rising on her tiptoes, she still couldn’t see who it was, so she asked, “Mom, who’s at the door?”
Wendy smoothed back her hair. “The kid from next door. You know, that very pretty woman. Her family even came over to say hello around the time of your birthday.
“They’ve been dropping by our place to hang out a lot lately. They’re really friendly.”
Raymond had originally planned to haul his son into the study–maybe even take him to the woodshed while he was at it–to reprimand him for acting like the stray tomcat who’d run off

But seeing this neighbor with bad intentions show up at the door again, he let go of George’s collar and tossed out a thoughtful remark. “Come to think of it, not long ago, I actually called the cops and reported the family next door as suspected murderers.”
Murderers?
Maya’s ears perked up, and with the number of lunatics around her on the rise, she wasn’t even fazed to learn the neighbors were murderers. “And then?”
This comic–book world really was something else.
“And then there was no ‘and then.” Raymond said it with a touch of deflated regret.
The police naturally didn’t buy his wild story, and after finding the address was in a wealthy neighborhood, they couldn’t even be bothered to come investigate.
Hearing this, Wendy gave Raymond a pinch. “Since when are you some civic–minded citizen? What good does reporting them do?”
Having a murderer next door, they had to eliminate the threat at once, before the children at home were put in danger.
“I just wanted to try calling the tip line, didn’t I?” Raymond clutched his chest, his tone theatrical. “After all, having a murderer for a neighbor would freak anyone out.”
