“Oh right, you’re really super impressive.” George started laughing and tilted his head, as if recalling some amusing story. “Taking the gun Dad gave you, you killed the sniper first, then used the sniper rifle to take out two more people in a row. I’ve never seen a kid as brave as you.”
The conversation had circled right back around again.
Seeing the whole family fix their eyes on her all at once, Maya suddenly felt like she couldn’t sit still.
And it was right at that moment.
The doorbell rang yet again.
Who was it now? Was there no end to this?
Edric was slumped over his desk, lost in a hazy dream.
He woke up not knowing why, his face wet with tears he hadn’t even realized were there.
He gave it a light wipe and stared for a long while at the teardrops clinging to his fingertips, only coming back to himself a little when someone walked in.
“Are you all right, Mr. Edric?” The executive assistant had never seen Edric in such a state. The instant Edric’s gaze swept over, he asked a bit nervously, his mind going blank, “Are you homesick?”
Edric propped one side of his face lightly on his hand.
Homesick?
“Maybe,” he said softly.
In Edric’s blurry dream, it seemed he was always crying.
Half–asleep and half–awake, all he could remember was the last bit of dialogue from the dream.
“So before we say goodbye, could
tell me your you
name?”
“My name’s Maya.”
“All right, Maya.”

Edric silently buried his face deep in the crook of his arm and thought it over without a word.
That was honestly…
Such a sappy little exchange.
About to be lectured by the whole family in turn, Maya heard the knock at the door right then, and it was nothing short of a lifesaver.
She practically bounced up off the couch on the spot and bolted for the door.
“Coming, coming.”
Answering as she went, she pulled the door open in one motion, a relieved smile still on her face.
But the instant she got a clear look at the person standing outside, that bit of a smile froze on her face and vanished without a trace.
Maya didn’t say a word, just raised her hand with a blank expression and slammed the door shut hard, her movement fast and ruthless, showing no mercy at all.
Her strength was already far beyond an ordinary person’s, to the point that even a grown man might not be a match for her, and the force she put into shutting the door was anything but polite.
Edric, however, only let out a soft sigh, his tone flat and giving away little emotion. “You’re really this against me?
“And here I thought we counted as good friends.”
That weightless little phrase, “good friends,” gave Maya goosebumps all over.
There’d been no real expression on his face as he said it, just a faint trace of a smile pulled across it, hypocritical and distant, the kind that made her hand itch to throw a punch straight at him.
“Who’s good friends with you? The two of us aren’t even close, are we?” she shot back on reflex. Before she’d even finished, Edric had already reached out and braced his hand against the door.
With a light press of his slender fingers, looking like he’d barely used any force at all, he forced the door she’d nearly gotten shut to inch back open bit by bit.

Maya was mildly startled.

Her strength was long past anything an ordinary person could match, and even a strong, sturdy grown man would go stumbling backward from one hard kick of hers, so there was no reason she couldn’t manage to shut a single door.
It just went to prove that Edric really wasn’t some weakling like Toby.
The door was wrenched open cleanly, and the young man turned sideways and squeezed in through the doorway with composure.
He still wore an utterly ordinary little smile, except his complexion looked a bit off, carrying a touch of travel–worn weariness.
Inside, George had been pressing down on Toby’s head, quietly coaxing him to settle down and quit squirming and making a fuss.
Hearing the commotion at the door, the boy instinctively looked up.
The moment he got a clear look at who’d arrived, the easy smile on his face faded little by little, the corners of his mouth even drooping slightly, and he looked like he had a headache coming
“Edric.”
One look at Edric, and his teeth ached.
On the other side, Raymond and Wendy looked over at the same time. The two exchanged a glance, a rare flicker of astonishment crossing both their eyes.
