Chapter 264 Two Different People
It was a long while before Maya shot back, “So what is it you want me to do?”
There was a barb in her voice.

The living room fell quiet for a beat. Raymond held his coffee cup without moving, his gaze traveling discreetly back and forth between the two siblings.
Edric mulled it over for a moment, and when he spoke his voice came out a bit lower than usual. “I had a dream.
“A hazy dream.”
“So? Was I in the dream?” Maya took a step forward and threw it back at him, the air between them crackling with tension.
Edric said nothing, the silence wedged between the two of them.
Maya thought to herself that it was actually for the best that Edric had no memories.
Otherwise she really wouldn’t know how to face this person.
The Onyx of those three months and the Edric in front of her were too thoroughly split apart, like a mirror smashed into two halves that couldn’t be pieced back together no matter what.
Edric wasn’t angry, his gaze sinking, carrying a deep, still seriousness.
He actually admitted it. “Yeah, you were in the dream.”
He was testing her.
Maya could feel it.
Did he have his memories? It didn’t seem like it.
Among his brothers, Edric was the one with the richest emotions, the one who came closest to a normal person, and if he had his memories intact, there was no way he’d have this attitude.
Of this Maya was absolutely certain.
She didn’t know whether she felt relieved or a little sad.
Relieved because she didn’t want to get into the past with him.
The way Maya saw it, Onyx and Edric were simply two different people.

One was a pitiful little thing who needed her protection, the other was the eldest son of the Clarks standing here bearing down on her.
The sadness was because she’d never get to see the old Edric again.
“So is whatever happened in the dream really that important?” Maya pushed down that bit of bitterness and lifted a smiling face. “Edric, did you call me over just for a dream that doesn’t even exist?”
“It’s not important.”
Edric answered fast.
But the moment the words left his mouth, he couldn’t help asking himself again deep down.
Was it really not important? Then why had he cried? When he’d woken from the dream, his heart had felt like someone had given it a squeeze, and that dull ache hadn’t fully faded even
now.
He couldn’t make sense of it.
So he wanted to try and see whether he could find the answer in her.
Even though in his eyes she was just a kid who didn’t understand anything, and her answer might be utterly meaningless, Edric still wanted to talk with her.
“But I’m still very curious. We clearly shared something–proof that it wasn’t just a fantasy.
“So I find it hard to chalk all of this up to a dream.”
Edric leaned in slightly, his gaze locking onto her. “You know something, don’t you?”
The tone was a question, but the air around him was especially oppressive.
Like a knife still in its sheath, all its edge pressed into that one offhandedly delivered line.
Maya bristled.
Almost on instinct, her back went tense and her chin lifted slightly, a textbook defensive posture. “I don’t know anything.”
Raymond watched the two siblings‘ standoff.
Edric and Maya both had a bit of a tit–for–tat, combative edge with each other.
Edric was highly aggressive, trying to press her for something.

That was just his nature, and his position as the eldest son of the Clarks meant there were rarely times he ever needed to bow his head.
With Maya too, it was that same instinctive, pressuring style of questioning.
Maya clearly wasn’t buying any of it.
The two of them were both strange.
There was a contradiction and distance in it, like acquaintances meeting who weren’t actually all that close.
Like two threads tangled together, then forced apart and set back side by side, never quite lining up again no matter what.
Wendy was still smiling away cluelessly, taking it for the two siblings simply getting along well.
“Are Maya and Edric this close?” Of everyone present, only Raymond’s dopey wife was sincerely, wholeheartedly delighted, and she covered her cheeks. “The two of them really do have such a good sibling bond.”
Raymond was speechless.
Maya really didn’t like talking about the past with Edric.
It always left her with an indescribable hollow feeling.
She really did love Onyx, the three months together weren’t fake, and her desire to protect him wasn’t fake either.
But none of that had anything to do with Edric.
His sudden, aggressive questioning would only remind her over and over that the Onyx she’d spent three months with day and night, and this overbearing Edric, were two different people.
She lowered her eyes and pressed those churning emotions back down bit by bit.
When she looked up again, she wore that same indifferent expression once more.
