Chapter 263 I’m Not Scared of You Anymore
Not understanding, Toby just asked, “Do assassins screen for degrees too?”
He didn’t want to study, and he hated school.
The topic drifted further and further off course until it had wandered clean out of sight.
Wendy pressed a hand to her forehead. “Maya.”
Her tone was gentle with a hint of danger underneath.
“Do you really have to twist Mom’s words around on her like this?”
Maya instantly wilted.
“But I really don’t want to go to school anymore. I just want to be an assassin straightaway.”
Maya had figured this out over these past few days too.
Being an assassin came with a kind of brainless joy, no need to think too hard, and what it really tested wasn’t IQ so much as your own raw ability.

“Absolutely not! The whole family’s counting on you, sweetheart.” Wendy gazed at her daughter, her eyes full of the hope that her daughter would make something great of herself, and she clenched her fist to cheer her on. “Maya, you have to study hard and get into college. Whatever you do, don’t go down the wrong road and turn into a loser like your dad, your brothers, your grandpa, or your uncle!”
In one breath without a single pause, she criticized every male present one by one.
The whole bunch, freshly slapped with the “loser” label, went speechless.
Were they really that hopeless?
Maya blanked for a second and instinctively spoke up. “Doesn’t Edric have a really high level of education?”
The moment Edric came up, her mind couldn’t help drifting back to Onyx.
During those three months on the island, Edric had always obediently washed her clothes for her, swatted mosquitoes off her, and on days when the heat was unbearable he’d even fan her attentively with a hand fan.
He’d be on the verge of heatstroke himself and still stubbornly insist he wasn’t hot at all.

Thinking of Edric made Maya happy.
But the very next instant, she looked up and met that cold, indifferent face of Edric’s, the spitting image of an aloof, unfeeling stepfather.
Maya didn’t say a word.
Her bared, grinning teeth stopped smiling on the spot.

The before–and–after shift in her expression was so wildly drastic that Edric, watching her face change in real time, couldn’t help raising an eyebrow slightly.
Did he really put her off this much?
“What good is Edric’s high education?” Wendy’s whole face soured. “He still won’t come back home with me.”
Her greatest wish these days was to bring one well–educated child back home so she could really show off in front of all the aunts and relatives.
“Sweetheart, being an assassin isn’t as free as you imagine.”
Wendy had quite a bit of insight into the assassin life, and she rambled on, trying to use the power of words to talk her daughter out of such a naive notion.
“There are a lot of rules in it.” She counted on her fingers. “My boss always said, kill this one today, kill that one tomorrow, you can’t just kill blindly, you have to kill with a system, with organization, with discipline.”
Such a pain.
All that fuss just to kill someone.
That lousy job back then hadn’t been the least bit enjoyable.
Every time, she was the one in the organization who shouted the loudest about quitting.
“That’s right, Maya, being an assassin isn’t as free as you think.” Raymond didn’t much approve of Maya’s assassin dream either, and he scrolled through Instagram on his phone and shoved it right in Maya’s face.
Raymond’s friends these days were basically all assassins from the Silent Archive, every last one of them.
Their daily posts weren’t about showing off gadgets, they were all complaints about work and everyday life.

For instance, some people staked out a spot for over a dozen hours and got eaten alive by mosquitoes, so infuriating.
Others cursed out their cheapskate employers for not paying extra on high–difficulty jobs.
Some went so far as to badmouth the deceased in their
posts.
The general level of character was rock–bottom across the board.
After Maya finished reading, the idea still wouldn’t die.
“I still want to be an assassin. I don’t want to go to school.”
Raymond hadn’t expected that even this wouldn’t shake her resolve.
The man couldn’t help putting a hand to his forehead. “When I have the time down the road, I’ll take you out on a mission once, Maya.
“Being an assassin isn’t all that much fun.”
He reached out and gave a light wave of his hand. “When the time comes, you stay right by my side, no running off and no getting into conflicts with anybody, understand?”
“Why can’t I get into conflicts with people?” Maya bit her lip.
“Because it’s a hassle, a real hassle…” He sounded thoroughly dispirited as he said it.
Getting into a conflict with someone meant talking, arguing, and maybe even ending up in a fight.
Raymond was a low–energy person.
He really didn’t much enjoy talking to people or having any kind of conflict, and as long as things didn’t go too far, he’d let a little friction or squabble slide whenever he could.
Maya said, “Got it.”
She was even starting to look forward to going out on a mission with Raymond.
Edric lightly folded his hands and rested them against his chin, and after listening to a full round of the family’s chatter, he slowly called out her name.
“Maya.”
