He secretly arranged for weapons to be delivered to the children on the island. He wanted to see them fight each other more viciously.
What was there to watch in a game of pretend?
Things only got interesting when blood was involved.
For the first three days, Maya and Alfred still had enough energy to barely keep going.
But by the fourth day, the constant running and severe physical exhaustion had left both of them completely drained.
Holding Maya’s hand, Alfred led her into a hidden cave.
The entrance was tucked away in a highly obscured spot and half concealed by thick vines, making it an ideal hiding place.
The ground was covered with a layer of dried grass left behind by some unknown animal, soft beneath their feet.
The moment they entered the cave, Maya couldn’t help rubbing her tired eyes. “I’m kind of sleepy.”
Alfred quietly leaned against the stone wall and shifted his shoulder slightly so Maya could rest more comfortably.
Patting her shoulder, he spoke softly in a calm voice that naturally put people at ease. “Go ahead and sleep. I’ll keep watch.”
Maya didn’t waste any time. Curling up against him, she mumbled, “Remember to keep checking the tracker and watch for anyone getting close. We’ll switch shifts later.”
Alfred hummed in agreement and leaned back against the stone wall.
At eight years old, the boy’s frame had not fully developed yet, but his back remained perfectly straight. Sitting there quietly with his eyes lowered, he looked like a little knight.
Maya wasn’t a heavy sleeper.
Because she still had things on her mind, there was always a thread of tension stretched tight in her head. She slept on and off for about an hour before naturally waking up.

Their hiding place was indeed well concealed. Several green dots on the tracker wandered around nearby, but none of them managed to discover the cave.
Maya sat up.
Looking at the exhausted Alfred, she said, “You should sleep for a while too. I’ll wake you later, and then we’ll find another place to hide.”
As she spoke, she gently wrapped an arm around him, patted his head, and smiled. “Go to sleep. I’ve rested enough already.”
Alfred leaned against her shoulder.
The brother and sister huddled tightly together.
The weather on the island changed constantly. Rain began falling outside. The leaves beyond the cave rustled softly, and wind drifted in through the entrance carrying a chill.
Maya rubbed her arms as goosebumps rose across her skin. This is rough, she thought.
Back then, she and Edric had often lived through hardships like this.
And now she and Alfred were going through the same thing.
Maya had already developed decent wilderness survival skills before this, but living on a remote island still meant unavoidable bumps and scrapes. Cuts frequently appeared on her legs, and she often ended up bleeding from minor injuries.
Food was available on the island, but as members of the fleeing side, they didn’t dare approach the supply points. They had no choice but to fend for themselves.
The two children spent a while figuring out how to start a fire and ended up covered in dirt and
soot.
After exchanging a glance, Maya burst out laughing.
Alfred couldn’t help smiling as well.
Neither of them had any experience cooking outdoors. Whenever they grilled fish, it was either burnt or undercooked.
After sharing a flavorless grilled fish, they started running again.
All they had experienced was exhaustion and misery.

“Only three days left until it’s over,” Maya said, trying to encourage them. “Come on, we can do it.”
The wound on her knee had become infected because she had no way to properly clean and treat it. A constant prickling pain lingered there.
Maya lowered her head and blew on it twice, trying to ease the pain. When it didn’t help, she simply pulled her pant leg back down and stopped worrying about it.
She stepped backward twice, pushed off with her foot, and climbed up a tree in five swift
movements.
Crouching among the branches, her small figure hidden behind the leaves, she peered through gaps in the foliage and began searching for a new hiding spot.
“How did she get up that tree? Did any of you see it?”
The uncle leaned closer to the screen. When he saw the scene captured by the drone, his eyes narrowed into slits.
The Clarks controlled a famous assassin organization, and he was responsible for managing its personnel.
That was why he attended every trial like this, looking for promising children worth recruiting.
