Back then, their classmates had thought Maya and Alfred’s essays were just creative fiction.
Who would’ve thought they were actually writing from real life?
Toby slowly stirred the ginger tea in his cup. He didn’t want to drink it and was trying to stall. “You can make friends with people who can accept who you are.
“But…” He paused. “I don’t think ordinary people can accept someone whose family is connected to an assassin organization.”
If Maya truly wanted to make friends, ordinary students were out of the question.
She could only look for people like herself.
“Or you could just keep your background to yourself,” Edric said calmly. “There’s no rule saying you have to share your family background with your friends, right?”
Maya looked thoughtful. “I get it.”
To her, it honestly didn’t matter even if she had no friends.
She didn’t need friends.
She needed family.
She did have a few classmates at school whom she was close to.
She just did not know whether they could still be friends with her after she went back.
A week after returning from the island.
The house was empty except for the two kids and George; everyone else had gone back to handling their own business.
That was when Maya and Alfred got called in for a talk with Philbert.
The reason was simple. Edric had been going easy on them so blatantly that it was impossible to ignore.
Philbert genuinely couldn’t understand it. How on earth had Edric managed to turn so soft- hearted?

Philbert didn’t call Edric back right away. Instead, he took an indirect approach and specifically requested that Toby bring the kids over.
After giving it some thought, Wendy agreed.
“Fine, but don’t let Toby go. Have George take you. George deals with your grandpa all the time. Your grandpa gets a headache the moment he sees him.”
Toby was always polite and well–mannered around elders. He was too good at putting on an act.
Besides, he could not bring himself to be shameless.
A thick–skinned troublemaker like George was perfect for the job.
At first, Wendy had strongly opposed the idea of Maya being taken back to the Clark Residence.
But after weighing the pros and cons, she compromised.
She wanted Maya to have more choices.
The assassin world was too small. If Maya followed them, she could only keep circling within that dangerous world.
The Clarks were different.
A Clark identity opened doors in any social circle or elite class.
Connecting with the Clarks would do Maya far more good than harm.
Naturally, Raymond had no objections to the decision either.
On the way there, Maya leaned against the car window, looking a little anxious. “Do you think your grandpa is going to be furious with us?”
“If he’s mad, he should be mad at Edric,” Alfred said indifferently.
Taking your anger out on kids just proved you were an incompetent adult.
Seeing how nervous Maya was, George chuckled and poked her cheek.
“Relax. Grandpa doesn’t eat people.”
The Clark Residence was hidden deep in heavy shade.
The last time Maya had visited, her strongest impression had been how quiet the place felt.

The main building had clean, sharp lines. Large glass walls reflected the daylight, creating a space that felt open yet isolated. The window frames and columns were in muted colors. The furnishings were sparse, with only a few minimalist art pieces adding to the atmosphere of distance and restraint. It looked like an exquisite, cold cage: luxurious, yet lonely.
They crossed the front yard and entered the main hall.
The owner of the estate was sitting in the reception room, playing chess. He didn’t spare even a glance for the three kids.
George broke the silence. “Grandpa, why did you ask us to come?”
“Their training time on the island,” Philbert said slowly in his deep voice, “was only one–third of the required duration.”
His gaze shifted briefly to Maya.
