Chapter 309 The Last Witness of the Beginning
“In our line of work at you tell people you have that last hame, anyone who’s spent years in the underworld will react
The Clarks were famous for protecting their own.
Anyone who dared hurt a member of the family always ended badly.
That reputation had been built on countless lives. It was enough to stare even the most reckless criminals in the underground world. The moment they heard the name Clarks, many people became cautious, worried they might have crossed the wrong family.
Maya thought about it.
Now she finally understood why people always asked who her parents were whenever she mentioned her last name.
So that was the reason.
The one with the strongest connections is actually me?
“I get it now.” Maya suddenly realized. “You all thought I was one of the Clarks.”
Ernest took the chance to ask, “Are you?”
Maya rolled her eyes at him. “I’m not telling you.”
That answer left Ernest speechless.
Lucy twitched her mouth.
Yep. Definitely a little troublemaker.
“Haha, kids are like that. They don’t know any better,” Chance said, trying to smooth things over. “Don’t take it personally.”
Ernest thought about her gambling brother, her school-dropout brother, and her useless father.
She also had an older brother who kept causing medical accidents and probably shouldn’t even have medical license.
Suddenly, he felt he had overreacted.
He knew a little psychology.
Maya hadn’t been lying earlier. Her family really was a mess.
Ernest gave her another look and quietly turned to leave.
Maya waved at him. “Bye! Don’t forget to bring me to dye my hair tomorrow–

Chance burst out laughing. When he had arrived earlier, he had seen the usually cool and untouchable Ernest being pinned against a desk by Maya.
He had nearly died laughing.
There really was someone for everyone.
A schemer like Ernest needed someone like Maya, whose mind worked in the weirdest ways.
After everything that had happened today, Lucy was completely exhausted. Thinking about their director s attitude, she scratched her head and felt relieved. “Good thing the director didn’t make a big deal out of
this.”
Normally, they wouldn’t even bring a stranger inside. Ask a few extra questions, and the person might be treated as a spy.
There was no way they would have been let off this easily.
Maya really was lucky.
“Enough talking. Let’s go to the office.”
Worried that someone might overhear them, Chance led the girls to his office.
The room wasn’t big, maybe a hundred square feet. Three desks sat against the wall. They were covered with files and computers. The curtains were closed, and the white fluorescent light made the room look cold and lifeless.
As soon as the door was shut, Maya checked herself to make sure no listening devices had been planted on her. Then she looked up. “Lucy and Chance, did you guys know who Ernest really is?”
Lucy shook her head. “I don’t know much about him.”
୮
Chance looked unconcerned. “Why are you so curious about him? Who he is has nothing to do with you. What you need to do is leave as soon as possible. Seriously, I’m begging you.”
Maya ignored him and continued thinking. Her thoughts raced, and her words followed just as fast. She organized her thoughts while talking to herself.
“Could Ernest have some kind of leverage over your director? But what kind of secret could make a perso in power obey someone else completely? Your director runs an entire intelligence network in the underworld. Someone like that has seen everything. Why would one secret make him bow to another person?”
As she said it, Lucy also found it strange.
