After being blocked several times already, she was fairly certain every known exit had been sealed.

Her stomach dropped.

The main entrance might be the only way out.

A person couldn’t escape. A fly probably couldn’t either without having multiple guns pointed at it.

Still, Lucy refused to give up.

As an intelligence officer, she knew better than to believe she had run out of options.

Clinging to that final thread of hope, she prayed there was some forgotten passage that had escaped notice.

Leading Maya through a series of twisting corridors, she followed a backup route she occasionally used.

The entire time, she silently prayed no one was behind them.

As a familiar intersection came into view, her pulse quickened.

Then she saw something she would never forget.

Colleagues she recognized were running for their lives, shoving past one another and turning the already narrow underground corridor into complete chaos.

Lucy stopped short.

“What’s going on?” she asked, unconsciously tightening her grip on Maya’s sleeve until her knuckles turned white.

Someone in the crowd recognized her.

“Lucy?” a voice called from the corner, carrying a note of surprise and relief. “Lucy, you’re alive!”

The man pushed through the crowd and grabbed her hand as though he’d found a lifeline. “Where did you come from? Is it safe that way? Is there another exit?”

“No. I’ve checked a lot of places. There’s no way out.” Lucy frowned. “What’s happening here?”

“There’s an assassin.” His voice trembled. “Several safehouses got hit. When the alarms went off, everyone started evacuating. That assassin’s been clearing out the entire north side. We were hiding in the safehouses, and then he… He broke in.

An assassin? Maya’s eyes brightened.

That actually worked in her favor.

That meant one of her people was here.

Her thoughts raced.

Relief settled over her as she pulled Lucy against the flow of the crowd toward the exit. “Don’t worry. I’ll get you out.”
