Chapter 363 Hiding at the Buffet
There was even a boy who looked about their age, pointing straight at them.
The adult beside him hastily pressed his arm down and scolded him. “Don’t point.”

Seeing them being sized up–and some of them still snickering–Iris frowned slightly. “Ugh, I can’t take this.”
All Iris wanted right now was to hole up with Maya and go back to living their dark little killer lives.
Not to run off to some glittering gathering spot for trust fund kids and get stared at by a crowd of people.
Maya glanced at Somalie.
The young lady was chatting up a storm with those few old acquaintances, and from the look of it, she wouldn’t be wrapping up anytime soon.
“Come with me.” Because of the noise, Maya raised her voice a little, grabbed Iris, and slipped off toward the buffet area to the side.
The location of this buffet section had most of the banquet hall’s warm golden light blocked off by a pillar, making it the perfect spot for the two of them to hide out together.
Iris leaned against the pillar, her brow finally relaxing a little.
“This kind of gathering usually doesn’t end until really fate, right?”
Maya said, “Maybe?”
She wasn’t sure of tonight’s schedule either.
They’d already been late coming in, so Toby or some elder had probably already finished the speech portion, and most of the people here were strangers.
Maya wasn’t keen on staying in a place like this any longer than necessary, either.
Iris tugged at the hem of her skirt. “When can we change out of these clothes? They’re so much trouble.”
Maya said, “You want to change?”
Iris nodded eagerly.
“Then, we’ll go change in a bit.” Maya’s own closet was mostly little dresses too, but they were still far more convenient than this elaborate, sprawling skirt.
Before Iris could ask exactly where they’d be changing, Maya had already pulled out a chair, sat down, and started piling food onto the plate in front of her.
Seeing this, Iris sat down across from her, picked up a chocolate finger puff, took a bite, and her eyes lit up.
“Maya, what do you say we both jump ship and go work for Somalie? The chefs these rich families hire

lecture her wavering friend. “How could you betray our organization? A little food is all it takes to buy you off? Have you forgotten who gave you a bite to eat when you were starving?”
Iris clutched her chest. “I was just joking.”
A moment later, she couldn’t help herself again. “…Boohoo, but the food here really is so good.”
The two girls chatted idly for a few lines.
Then the tabletop was suddenly tapped twice, unhurried.
“Hey, Maya.”
A woman’s voice came from overhead, laced with a faint smile.
Maya looked up and saw the waves of hair falling at the woman’s shoulder and the familiar face.
She set down her fork. “Annie?”
Annie stood beside the table, one hand resting casually on the edge. Her dark mermaid gown flared from the calf into layered waves. Her hair was pinned up with the ends falling right at her collarbone, and the whole look was serene and elegant.
“Maya, why are you dressed like this?” In Annie’s memory, Maya’s style had never been this over–the–top.
Maya rested her chin in her hand. “Does it look good?”
Annie answered honestly. “Pretty cute.”
She’d noticed the two of them from the very start.
But she hadn’t paid much attention, assuming they were some little girls brought along by another family who didn’t know better.
The longer she looked, though, the more familiar they seemed.
So, she’d simply ditched her own dance partner and crossed half the banquet hall to confirm.
Only when she got up close did she realize–they really were people she knew.
‘Why are you eating over here?” Annie tapped the table lightly, not quite understanding.
At a Clark banquet, Maya’s brothers and elders were all on the other end of the hall.
For Maya to avoid them and instead hide over here eating, it genuinely caught her off guard.
Maya answered without a trace of guilt. “Because I’m hungry. I need food.”
