Chapter 374 Not a Drop of Blood
Why?
His words carried a sharp edge, and he sneered. “What use could a bunch of dead weight like them possibly be?”
Fechad
“Sweetheart,” said Wendy, who had always been delighted to see her daughter make friends, taking a small sip of her wine, “a friend doesn’t have to be useful to be worth having.”
Edric gave a slight tug at the corner of his mouth.
He was displeased too, but Edric wouldn’t let it show, choosing instead to gently point out a different issue from the sidelines, all to steer things toward what he actually wanted.
“But Mom, that girl in the pink dress is Maya’s coworker, and the two of them are always making plans to ditch school together to go run jobs.”
He and George had long since done a full workup on every coworker in Maya’s orbit.
In the end, the two of them had reached a conclusion–Iris was a good assassin, but a chronic truant.
The moment anything touched on a child’s schooling and education, Wendy’s usual composure vanished, and she wrung her hands, a little anxious.
She could understand that every kid hit a rebellious phase somewhere in their teens.
Reason also told her she ought to respect her child and give her some freedom.
Even so, her heart wanted to wipe out every possible factor that might lead her daughter astray.
Especially anyone dragging down her child’s grades. People like that simply shouldn’t exist.
But her daughter’s social life mattered too.
Kill them, and her daughter would have no friends.
Wendy’s reason and her emotions went a few rounds in her head, and in the end reason edged out a narrow win, settling on a compromise.
She decided to go take a look for herself.
“What are you all talking about?” Wendy came strolling over, resting a hand on Maya’s shoulder, her smile carrying a natural warmth. “Mind if I listen in?”
Phoebe looked up.
She found herself face to face with this gentle, graceful woman who seemed like an entirely different species from Toby.
She let out an unconscious sigh of relief and greeted her. “Hello, Mrs. Clark.”

Firushed
“Hello, Mrs. Clark. We were just talking about Maya,” Iris said, the kind of person who said whatever was on her mind, and she answered honestly. “Somalic was just asking why she’d lose her mind and take a job as a bodyguard.”
Maya cut in to explain. “It’s a legitimate job I took on, and I most certainly didn’t lose my mind.”
“Is that so?”
Wendy showed no trace of displeasure. “If it’s a job, then once you take it, you absolutely have to see it through.”
Even an assassin had professional ethics.
“Mom.” Maya suddenly remembered something, looked down at her dress, and said in a solemn voice, “I got into a fight tonight, and my dress didn’t tear or get dirty.“.
Only then did Wendy learn her daughter had been in a fight.
“That’s wonderful.” She looked her daughter over in surprise, then swept her into a hug right then and there, arms tightening, chin resting on the top of her head, praising her without a moment’s hesitation. “You’ve improved this fast. You really are my pride and joy.”
Wendy’s standard for judging an assassin’s technique was remarkably simple–it had to be clean and efficient enough that not a drop of blood touched your clothes.
She had drilled this point into Maya more times than she could count.
Clearly her daughter had taken it to heart, and she’d pulled it off beautifully.
Watching the scene, Iris pressed her lips together with a quiet pang of envy.
People who ended up in the underground trade tended, as a rule, to have had unhappy childhoods and
broken homes.
“Mrs. Clark, I took part tonight too, and I didn’t get my dress dirty either,” Iris said in a small voice.
“Oh.” Wendy turned to look at her at once, and once she realized what the girl was getting at, a smile crinkled the corners of her eyes, just as gentle. “Then you did really well too.”
She’d been praised.
Iris froze for a beat, then the corners of her mouth tilted up.
This was the kind of person who, the moment anyone gave her an opening, would chatter on without end.
“Honestly, Maya’s a lot better than me, but I’ll keep working at it too.
“My goal for the future is to become someone like the legendary Banshee.”
Hearing that familiar code name come out of a child’s mouth, Wendy’s smile flickered for an instant.
She gave a faint smile. “You admire her?”
