Chapter 376 Three Idiots Crash an Engagement

“Mom,” Maya said, her head drooping as she glanced at Iris, then suddenly lifted it, her big eyes curving as she fought to keep the anticipation out of her voice. “Is my uncle coming today?”
“He is.” Wendy thought back to the message she’d just received, her voice gentle. “Once the banquet wraps up, we’re holding a family meeting all together tonight, and your uncle’s coming too, though he might be a little late, since he needs to do a lot of prep before heading out. Why the sudden question?”
With a mischievous streak, Maya tugged Iris over. “My partner here has been dying to meet him.”
Iris was shocked.
“Who wants to meet him?” She didn’t even know the guy, so how could she possibly want to meet a total stranger she’d never laid eyes on?
Maya said, “You’ll know when you see him.”
Iris figured she was being teased again, and she let out a laugh right away. “Forget your uncle. Even if our boss showed up, I wouldn’t be scared.”
Hearing that, Maya patted her partner on the head, the curve of her mouth carrying a faint, barely noticeable touch of gloating. “You said it, not me.”
“Yeah, I did.” Iris pinched her cheek, puzzled. “What are you smiling about?”
This banquet was a grown–up’s social arena, and amid all the clinking glasses, every exchange came with its own price tag and purpose.
But for anyone outside the world of fame and fortune, there was only one mission here–to eat and drink.
As the banquet entered its closing stretch, Maya slipped out early.
Holding Iris by the hand, she cut through the side hallway to the changing room, planning to get out of those bulky clothes first.
She pushed open the door to the dressing room.
Unlike Somalie’s sea of pink, Maya’s dressing room was Wendy’s aesthetic territory.
୮
From pale apricot to deep wine red, from satin to velvet, the little dresses were lined up neatly by color gradient and fabric, packed wall to wall until they filled the entire room.
Iris arched a brow and brushed a finger against a misty–blue cocktail dress. “You really sold out our working–class roots, didn’t you? Completely.”
In all fairness, every dress in here was exquisite and elegant, whether it was a gown or some other cut.
But in the end, the two pragmatic assassins still chose to change into ordinary clothes.
Simple T–shirts and pants, leaving the frilly skirts and little tiaras behind in the dressing room.

The lightweight clothes had both of them relaxing without a word, and they dropped into chairs, having successfully dodged the social aftershocks of the crowd breaking up outside.
The farewell small talk the end of a banquet often dragged on longer than the opening, and Maya had no desire to go back and submit to a second round of it.
She looked at her phone to check how much of the crowd had already left.
After Philbert and his group went off to the meeting room, laughing and chatting along the way, plenty of the more perceptive guests took the hint and made their excuses, slipping away one after another.
This time, the two of them timed their return perfectly.
The guests had only just dispersed, and the hall held nothing but waiters weaving through to clean up, the lingering mingled scents of wine and flowers still hanging in the air.
Maya led Iris in through the side door.
Her gaze landed on Ned, who’d just rushed back road–weary from outside.
Her step hitched, and she shot him a lightning–quick glance.
Remembering her earlier feat of yanking on his hair, Maya put on a perfectly innocent face, and the girl chirped a breezy greeting. “Good evening, Uncle Ned.”
Iris poked her head out from behind her friend and finally got a look at this uncle Maya kept mentioning.
But after a careful once–over, aside from being decent–looking, she couldn’t spot anything special about
him.
Her read on people was plain and direct.
Only those who made her feel threatened were worth paying attention to.
And this one in front of her… it felt like this man would be in mortal danger if he so much as ran into a stray dog on the street.
ľ
So weak.
“Good evening, Maya.” Ned’s expression eased, his voice calm, carrying the easygoing temper of an elder who hadn’t shown his face in a while.
After answering Maya’s greeting, he glanced over at Iris in passing, and his originally mild gaze shifted into the pure scrutiny of a boss sizing up a subordinate.
Ned’s impression of this particular assassin was fairly deep.
As for why it was so deep…
Well, it naturally couldn’t have been a good one.

When Maya, Wisteria, and Iris got together, the three of them produced a remarkable chemical reaction.
Or rather, a remarkable suclear reaction.
This trio of so–called masterminds had even blown up online last year.
The headline read, “Three Idiots Crash an Engagement Party.”
When someone first sent him the clip of the trending story, Ned had still been wondering why on earth they were showing him this.
He clicked it open and saw his own niece, sporting that head of little curls, striding to the very front to lead the charge.
Bodyguards, security, you name it—not one of them could survive her second move.
The whole reason behind it was that Wisteria had dated some trust fund kid and gotten cheated on.
The three of them couldn’t put together one whole functioning brain between them, and being the blunt, headlong little assassins they were, they hit it off instantly, banded together, charged into the engagement party, and beat the groom to a pulp.
