Chapter 413 The Ghost Who Chatters About Family

George started rambling, going on and on like a full-time doting brother.

From her childhood to the brand of water she liked these days, no detail was too small, as if he meant to retrace every moment of her life over the past decade-plus.

As if the goal of his whole existence were to drop out of everything and study his sister’s every mood full-time.

Something was wrong with him.

Nelson couldn’t help shooting him a dead-fish stare.

George really was like a ghost drifting from place to place without a home, yet the moment family came up, he turned into a little bird, chirping endlessly about them.

So even a ghost had a family, apparently. The moment George talked about his own, that perpetually drifting man finally seemed tethered to something, like a kite caught by its string.

“You’re a creep, aren’t you, George? Staring at your sister and studying her whenever you’ve got nothing better to do.”

gesture. “An

“That’s harsh. How can you say that about me?” George laughed and made a little information broker’s got to have a bit of-well, some negligible little knack for observation. I’ve just turned that knack on my family.”

“Forgive me,” Nelson said, pressing his palms together in earnest. “I owe my brother an apology.”

He had always believed that a good beating produced a dutiful younger brother.

Ian had taken more than his fair share of tough love from him over the years-if you added up every ass-whipping he took growing up, it’d stretch three times around the block.

“My little brother’s even gotten himself a girlfriend lately.” Nelson pressed a hand to his forehead, worn out just bringing it up. “Though I suppose falling in love is still better than trailing around my scheming relatives with nothing better to do. If he wants to date, let him.”

“Your brother’s dating this young?” George said.

“More or less,” Nelson said. “He’s only 14, but in our circles, dating’s perfectly normal.”

Unlike Nelson’s who-cares attitude, George turned strangely worked up over the subject.

“If my sister ever dated this young, I’d-”

He nervously bit his fingertip, his eyes suddenly turning dangerous. “How does dumping her boyfriend in the ocean sound to you?”

Nelson was speechless.

“Calm down, would you?”

“Haha, just messing with you.” He gave a low chuckle, and there was something off about the sound-and sure enough, the next line took a sharp turn.

“I’d never let him die that easy.”

Nelson said nothing.

“Honestly, whoever ends up crossing paths with your sister is the one who’s truly cursed.”

God only knows what kind of circus made up the rest of George’s family.

“If you’re honestly this bored, then instead of researching whether your sister might date young, why not go to a banquet that’s actually worth something?” Nelson gave a light shake of the card in his hand. “It was meant for my brother, but I wasn’t planning to take him. You want to come along?”

“What’s that?”

George looked at the thing in his hand, his eyes narrowing slightly. “A boat ticket?” The card was made of fine stuff-clearly no ordinary article.

“What boat ticket-it’s an invitation,” Nelson said, exasperated. “I’ve got a spare. You want it?”

George didn’t even think about it. “No way am I going.”

“Save it for somebody else.”

Nelson looked at the invitation, shook his head, and stuffed it offhandedly into a drawer.

By the time Edric reached the old house, dusk had settled in on every side. He didn’t go to see his two younger brothers; instead, he walked straight up to Maya.

“Can we talk?”

His eyes were heavy, carrying a cold, lifeless stillness.

Meeting her eldest brother’s gaze, Maya’s gut told her this wasn’t good. She thought Edric was a

She glanced left and right and caught both her brothers pricking up their ears in unison.

They seemed to want to listen in too.
